We've had pretty good luck, all in all, but this particular site requires vigilance with fungicide Smile

Going to have our second meal of beets tonight. The seeds we bought are not germinating well so I have had to augment my original planting quite a bit. The bi-color beets are doing quite well though and we actually have some rather large ones already. The golden and detroit dark red are struggling.

The tomatoes I grew in the house are MUCH further along than the ones we purchased and will need to be tied to their trellis this week. I have already had to majorly prune them 2x!

The bees ... big hives, not much honey yet. lots of activity out there, hope it comes in soon!

Hope everyones gardens are growing well!
O.k., does anyone else have decorative hops growing in their yard? I want to trample the darn things, as they keep finding their way onto the phone wires(but not the electric), and I have to chop them off, then have stinging marks where they've touched my arm.
Would some roundup take them out? or is there a better way to get rid of them?
Even the beer maker in the house doesn't want to deal with them any more.
Decorative hops? Never heard of that. Some heavily salted, very hot water might do it. Maybe add a bit of bleach. Just don't get that anywhere near plants you want.

Counselor, our tomato plants are just now starting to get proto-tomatoes. We do have some small zucchini and the basil is going now, so we've started eating it with everything... okay not EVERYthing. The slugs ate all our strawberries and are munching the potato plants. I don't know how they get in but I've run out of patience with the little MFers. Undecided

Decorative hops, as in they thought they looked nice hanging off of the porch, but didn't know that they really could make beer. I'm finding that a lot of things that they did with the garden don't make sense, like the Hollyhock bush and cone flowers in front of a row of hostas(it would look better in reverse). I'm going to have to fix that eventually... but thanks for the tips on killing them. I'd rather do something natural than use the round up.
Gee, I wish you could send them my way - I bet we could find a spot for them. But shipping plants has never worked out for me.

Yeah, and the hollyhocks are beautiful. They are a deep purple. I'm going to have to rearrange that garden, but in the fall.

Having grown Hops. I cannot believe there is anything called a decorative Hop plant. They are invasive, noxious and caused severe poison ivy like welts/lashes on my mothers arms when I grew them on a trellis for brewing. They would up invading lots of her garden space and pulling them was painful ... literally. Cover the spot with black palstic and bake them out.

I honestly believe that the people who owned this place had no idea what they were doing when they planted the hops. They were probably told is was a nice looking vine. It doesn't look like they planned anything, just plopped stuff in bare spots.
I still have a welt on my arm from chopping them down, but benedryl has taken out the itch.
OOOh, bake them out...sounds like fun!
