Thats what I am afraid of, although I did try a patio garden at our last place that had tons of sunshine - and I couldn't get weeds to grow. Ideally at least some herbs....but I am on the belief thats gonna be slim pickens even if I DO manage to get something going. Now we did remove some trees from the back of our property which might allow me to put some plants back there, but they wouldnt see sunshine until about noon.

The only problem I had with this house - love the shade for the house, but its terrible for any sort of gardening.
One of my favorite hobbies growing up with grand parents and parents that had a nack for it. I got a good sized veggie garden, been busy planting seeds going all out with flowers this year too. We have some fruit trees too, apple, cherry, pear peach and plum grapes and planting 6 blue berrie bushes this year. I took the Master Gardener course.
I am not a master of anything, except myself.

There are some shade tolerant herbs that I've had success with, but maybe not what you had in mind. I've had success with both mint and chives in the shade. Really, I don't think anyone could get mint to NOT grow - it really goes crazy. Fresh mint is nice to have around for Mojito making time Smile I used a strawberry jar last season for some of my herbs. Worked great and took up little space. Could even work indoors in a sunny window. Good luck if you should give it a go!
Well onions planted today - I must admit to enjoying this gardening malarky - Hopefully if they do well, and the Chili`s as well, I will have secured my food supply chain for most of my chili - con - carne this year. Now I need a cow, a meat mincer, a cumin plant, and a capsicum annuum plant (for the paprika etc)......Job Done!
I need to get out into my garden and get started. I've been doing respite care for a foster kid for the last 9 days, and I don't dare let him out of my sight, heaven knows what he will get into.
At least my crop of weeds are just beautiful right now.....

Could the respite kid do some gardening with you? Maybe help with the weeding?

Tan used to run a gardening club at the local primary school, and a lot of the kids who had not been so successful with Maths and English, really shone at gardening - it gave them a lot of confidence that they can succeed at something.
I know a thing or twelve about being a foster kid. The best thing you can do is have him be a part of your gardening. He is probably more frightened and upset and thats a perfect recipe for trouble. Have him help with a garden. Give him goals, it might be a way to reach out to him.

I like it! Thanks guys!
The chili`s are coming up.....hooray......so far so good, and this year I got them in early enough for the fruit in August, as opposed to last year, when the fruit was coming as we stalled and fell into Autumn and Winter...I hope to at least double my yield this year, 2 whole chili`s.......breakeven might be about 7 chili`s, but I am not in this for the profit, (thank goodness some might say).
Pleased to report signs of the Onions sprouting, (is that the right word?), whatever, there are green shoots coming up! I am chuffed to bits.
