When my first graders learn about putting an apostrophe before the "s" to show possession or to make a contraction, they automatically use it whenever a word ends in s. It takes a long time for them to apply it appropriately, and it seems that some people never get the correct application!
Kids are learning - which means they get a pass. For adults there's no excuse, IMO.
.
well, what I meant was that some adults never figure it out.
"Warsh" (Kansas term for removing soil from a person or object)
Justifiable homicide.
Detroit terms MES meaning EMS
Axe meaning Ask
I could go on forever!! Some never learn proper English or grammar.
oh, axe for ask is used here too.
Warsh...the relatives up north use that one as well.
Dod for Dad is common up there as well.
Proper English grammar was changed by texting. Some young people write like they text. It drives me crazy!(Especially on facebook and other forums).
Space Cadet brought up a good one! That drive's me nuts
How about your/you're and there/their/they're? Holy sheep dip but that bugs me!
If you don't mean "you are" then use "your". Easy as that.
One way to remember "there" correctly is to see "here" within it: both are location-related. "They're" is a contraction of "they are" and only that. The easy way to remember "their" as relating to people is to see "heir" within it.
Not that anybody here is doing this. Just thought I'd give everyone a quick C&P bit in case you need it....
And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Don't EVEN get me started on homophones & homonyms.

Yeah I don`t like those gay basher`s either.......
Gay bashers wearing headsets....
Can I add spelling errors to this rant? That bugs me right along with improper grammar. I realize that it is a struggle for some, however there are others that don't even try.
