According to Google, it`s his birthday today. (Shackleton)........

Have not heard or seen any more news on the Booze, although I did see some people raising a U Boat which had been sunk on its way to Norway at the end of the war. They found loads of booze, including Scotch and bucket loads of condoms - some extra large!

Seems they were on their way to one big p*ss up and party - although one German sailor said the large condoms were for floating metal strips out of the boat to fool sonar - like modern day chaffe, and not that they were, to quote Blackadder, "Packing the sort of tackle you normally find between the hindquarters of a Grand National winner".
Those goofy Nazis.

I had heard of a similar trick when I was in subs, but the sad part is if you know anything at ALL about subs - no self respecting sailor will just throw away condoms. We DO want Liberty Call!

Vitruvian Man

I'm one of those unfortunate souls that couldn't find a taste for scotch. I've tried, but for some reason my DNA won't allow that pleasure to exist.

But I can certainly appreciate the subtleties that scotch has to offer and this nonsense of someone not being able to taste it doesn't jive. They should allow the curator of the museum or some well known scotch drinker to have a "wee dram" taste and write about it and describe it.

As a young sailor stationed in Scotland, I was told the single malt was all the rage, but my poor 19 year old palate just didnt agree. That was almost 30 years ago, and I have made the adjustment. Doesn't take much for me, but its taste is much more pleasant and delightful. Back then I thought I was swallowing a combination of racing fuel and Drano!

I would LOVE to have someone get a nice wee dram of that vintage, because I would imagine he would be able to write a book about the whole experience!
It took me to my late thirties to finally see what people were on about, a bit like celery, and carrots.......
Boomer - I can attest to the fact that "racing fuel" (Cam ll or Moroso) tastes like nothing else on earth...
Once you have been doused with Sanitary Tank No. 1 - everything else is just water under the bridge. Well, excepting that Cam ll stuff....
No new news on the Booze, but some photo`s I found, and Makinlay are re-producing another batch of the whisky, RRP £100 a pop.

One of the original crates -
