Onto a more serious note. A change of Season and a change of mind has been weighing on me. And not to throw out that same cheesy cliche as I have so often done, but I really need to shed some pounds and find a mindset that will keep me focused towards healthy lifestyle choices in regards to diet and excercise. My Future depends on it.
Maybe someone has a vision to start an accountability thread? Something new for 2011. I know that for me, I do very well with having an accountability person(s). However in the area of fitness and diet, I do not have much accountability and or community.
Thought? Someone want to pioneer such a thing?
Is there an activity that you are particularly fond of.... and by that I mean is there something that you enjoy doing that burns calories... that you would not be afraid to do in front of your kids?
If you are sitting around and eating from boredom (as I will catch myself doing in the winter) then that needs to stop.
The first thing you need to do is slow your calorie intake
The second is get your metabolism up (preferably through the roof) and you will burn calories like a shrew.
I know this is a tough time to pull that off - but you asked.
Got a bike? Got a gym membership? Got a goat? No... wait... that's something else.
Get yourself busy - keep yourself busy. Set a goal - not on K2, but more on a hill... reachable, then set the next one a bit higher. When I was still fighting, I absolutely hated to start training, but once I made it over the "puking my guts out" stage, I loved being in that kind of shape. Just do it.
A GOAT? You beast.
I have joined the YMCA (I hear songs in the distance - put your arms down!) and am into Phase III. Phase I was reducing my caloric intake. Holidays are a b*$#% but you have to start somewhere. Phase II was to become more active. I started by walking. Was up to four miles, but my knees have been not responding well to the cold, so I havent been walking the last few weeks. Phase III involves starting to lift weights, swimming, and starting a basic weekly workout.
Big things to eliminate - fast food, and beer. I still treat myself to a glass or two of The Balvenie or Macallan (thanks a LOT Bubba!) but its nowhere near what I was taking in. Another take away - junk food. Dont sit in front of the tv and watch a movie while downing two or three bags of chips. Some other things I did was remove a lot of pop out of my diet, drinking a lot more water and tea, and doing a bit of stretching in the morning. Just stretching alone can speed your heart rate and metabolism. Don't get me wrong I am still pretty big, but I have gone from 4X down to 2X in about a year.
Just start with a small goal. Move up slowly. Just don't involve farm animals.
Ohhh I just want a magic pill for crying out loud! Isn't there a pill for this kinda stuff yet? Why should I have to even get out of bed to exercise when I can just pop a few workout pills? It's almost 2011 ya know. Exercise is way too old fassion and and square! Duh!
Get your workout pills for $19.99. I promise it will work or your money back.
But seriously MuffMan I love your ideas and please keep em coming. My first goal is to completely rid myself of diet soda. Only water and small amounts of sugar free Redbull for my workouts. I think I'm going to cut out bread too. As far as working out, yes I do. But I work out wrong. My cardio sucks!
Unfortunately, no magic pill............and if there was, we wouldn't hear about it. Maybe there is.......hmmmmmmmm
I've been working on trimming down myself. As far as exercise, the only thing I've been able to fit into my day is a 30 minute brisk walk, but due to the weather, I'm not always able to do that. However, active housework is supposed to count too.
Housework is a killer! Up and down all day takes a mighty toll on the ol' joints. And I'm not kidding when I say that washing dishes still kills my lower back.

Like others have mentioned here, the best thing to stay fit is to find a physical activity that you really enjoy actually doing. Doing boring exercises in the house or paying for some gym membership are usually only temporary measures for beginners. To keep at it, and make it part of your lifestyle, it has to be fun, where you even look forward to it.
If you are a sports fan, maybe find a group of people to actually play a game instead of just watching sports on television (personally, watching sports on TV bores me to death).
For me the answer was bicycle riding. I know lots of people here on the forum like motorcycle riding, but unfortunately those are good for burning gas, but not so good for burning calories. I decided to try bicycling after reading Bubba’s book about riding in Africa. My first trip around the block left me winded and miserable feeling, but I slowly built myself up. A few weeks later I was riding all the time, and the rest of that first summer I was losing close to 5 pounds a week.
I am lucky to live in an area that where they have made bicycle only trails converted from old railroad lines. These get you away from the roads, away from the auto traffic, and off by yourself through the quiet woods and fields. I admit if it wasn’t for these trails, I might not have stuck with it having cars and trucks buzzing all around me.
I even got my girlfriend into it and we spent a memorable weekend bicycling a beautiful trail in Wisconsin, spent the night in a motel in a quaint little town at the end of the trail, and then bicycled back the next day. What a fun weekend that was, almost forgot I was staying fit at the same time.
Now my problem is I like to eat around the holidays, and I don’t ride the bike during the winter time, so then the weight starts to come back on. I need to find a fun calorie burning winter activity too, maybe cross country skiing would fit the bill?

Wichita is bike-friendly... trails and city bike paths everywhere. I ride all year except now; just too tough on my lungs.
Paintball every weekend for at least five hours. In the Summer, I will lose five pounds during the day. I know a lot of that is water, but once you start burning fat - it keeps burning until you put something else into your system.
NBC, do you have a spot that you can hang a heavy bag? (kick boxer / boxing bag)
I PROMISE you - go three minutes as hard as you can go... let me know when you puke the first time.
You don't have to try to kill yourself... just punch and kick, your cardio will go through the roof if you stay with it.
Ya man, Last year I had this female trainner who I still have nightmares about! She was seriously a sick women! Her entire workout was timed stikes and kicks on the heavy bag, with squat thrusts in between. That pretty much killed me. And yes I did puke and she just laughed. My life took a sudden turn and unfortionately could not continue my trainning
thank God! She was so pretty but I was scared to death of her!
You pugilists are kinda out there

NBC - If I can do it I know you can. You got the sense of humor, the drumming all the other attributes. Even if all you do is start by walking around the block a couple times. Eventually you work up to 3 trips around then a mile, and then two. Just make a daily goal. One step at a time. I dont care if you are lifting cinder blocks or swimming or punching Mufasa's GOAT - eventually it can happen.
I'll even bet you a copy of the new cd (I assume should be sometime in the coming year!) that if you stuck to it, and just worked up slowly enough, that you could lose at least two pant sizes by my anniversary - June 13th. My current goal is to lose about 30 more pounds by then. What say ye?
Speaking of punching bags....thats not a bad idea Muf. I did that in the navy, and boy did it EVER relieve stress! All I did was pretend I was punching out the executive officer.
