That would be too cool!
Oh No!

B-17 Bomber crashes near Chicago suburbs:

There are not many of these left, another one gone.
Now THATS a bummer! They stop by here all the time - there are three different aircraft that visit. Sure hope that wasnt one of them. At least everybody got out.
That is a bummer! My granddad used to teach pilots to fly bombers (I don't know if it was this particular model) during WW2 and I always thought that it would be nice to see those some day.
Saw one at a local airshow a number of years ago. Had a brief chance to see the cockpit and wander through the fuselage. My hat was - and is - off to the men of the Eight Air Force that raided Germany by day. You would have to have a pair of cement stones to do that four times per week.
That is a real shame. It has reminded me though to go to my local Church and research the story behind the B17 Pilot buried there. I will report back.

There was a Flight Lieutenant buried at our local chapel, FLT Teddy Lawson - Walker (the Walker`s owned Knightwick Manor, and we owned one of the workman`s cottages on their land) - I had visions of this bloke being a dashing Spitfire Pilot, coming home to the manor in his sports car at weekends, until sadly KIA.

Anyway, researched him, he was KIA flying Bristol Beaufighters over Norway - I guess attacking German Naval vessels??
What a shame!
Coolest thing EVER to go up in one of those! God bless my dad--bombing Hitler's stuff was how my dad won most of his many medals.

As OHR said, you would have to be so brave to do it.

I think I would have prefered my chances as a night bomber in a Lancaster.....but stastically I don`t think your chances were any higher..
I was allowed to step up into the bay of a Mitchell B25 that took part in the Doolittle raid.
It was modified to take aerial photographs of other aircraft in flight, and the photographer crawled into the rear gunners position to "shoot".
As I popped up into the bay, I noticed black magic marker had been scrawled on the battery box now even with my face. It was the name of every crew member on the aircraft that flew the Doolittle raid. I had to stand there a moment and catch my breath.

I remember my dad saying he didn't care for the night bombing. He also said the B-17G was about as bullet-proof as it could get. It would fly just fine with BIG holes in it. The only thing that bothered him was long flights, low on fuel.

Mufasa--
I can only imagine what that felt like!!!!
