Welcome back, NWo - you were missed!

Ya know, when we took our trip over to your area, we spent most of our time in the UK. But we were in Ireland for a couple of days and dealt with the Euro. Ugh. I think we got ripped off on a cab ride and it was generally harder to handle transactions. We were quite happy to pass into N. Ireland and back into civilization. Hang tough - we Yanks are with you. Smile
Truly missed yer smilin' visage my friend.
Welcome back.
We need our Englishman back in here. Aint the same without ya friend.
Welcome back, NWo! Glad to see you again!
I like that-the 51st state. Smile

oooooh, the 51st state, hmm.
Welcome back NWo!
51st state? You mean a union between the two countries? A shared common currency, and all people have dual citizenship and everything? Rolleyes

Interestingly, in 1940 such a union was proposed by England to France, while in the midst of being invaded by the Germans. England proposed to unite the two countries into one, in the hope of continuing the fight from offshore and saving the French Naval fleet. It was going to be just like described above, "France and Great Britain shall no longer be two nations, but one Franco-British Union. Every citizen of France will enjoy immediately citizenship of Great Britain, every British subject will become a citizen of France."

So what happened? The French flat out rejected the proposal, even while facing imminent defeat. Some said they thought it was a plan by Britain to steal its colonies, and that they would rather be "a Nazi Province" then a "British dominion". Undecided

Personally I would welcome Great Britain as our 51st state. Wink

Cheers NWo!
Blimey it is really nice to see all your comments. I am coming to the end of this contract soon and should have some more time to spend here again - (helping Zap a few spammers along the way).

Hi Rey - Yes a single currency designed to stop wars and stuff, and it turns out to be a democracy hoover....I cannot see the citizens in these countries have their actions approved (or punished) by Brussels......Interesting times.
HWG, I am at a loss for words, but allow me the one thing that is magical at times like this: a big, firm hug. Best wishes.

Thats a great synopsis!!! Its been my understanding that there have been a couple times in history where such a proposal was made, and thence met its untimely demise, but I believe that the British French proposal was the farthest such a proposal went. I really believe though, that a GB/US merge would work much better, and might even include Canada. The problem is too many irons in that fire for it to amount to much IMHO.
Boomer--I agree that it MIGHT be possible to include Great Britain, but not Canada. I think our administration has alienated Canada. Their Prime Minister, though polite as Canadians are, is just about fed up with trying to deal with the DC'rs.
Rey-you're a wealth of knowledge. I didn't know about the 1940's try....
