Y'know when you see weather maps, and there's that one big chunk of land that's due east of Cuba and due north of Haiti?

Well, that's Great Inagua: I spent two days down there between Christmas and New Year's, and if you like bird-watching, it's just amazing. Checked off lots of species on my life list, including West Indies flamingos, roseate spoonbills, brown pelicans, and a clutch of egrets.

The other awesome thing that happened was going to buy alcohol: the pub a few blocks from where I was staying (private house) only sold Kalik to take-away (local, made by the same people who have the licence to brew Heineken).

To get Sands, the real Bahamas beer, I was offered a lift up to the one and only gas bar: the price (2 for $5) was pretty good, given that it's 3/$6.25 in Nassau.

As the only Caucasian I saw in my entire time there, I caused quite a stir when I walked in, proffered a $20 bill, and left with 8 cold ones. The nice lady who served me said that "everyone comes here to buy Sands. When they were making 'Pirates of the Caribbean', even Johnny Depp came in to buy his own beer."

:-)
Sounds like an interesting place. I'd love to see pictures! Smile
