RE: Great Reads - Gungawoman - 08-06-2011 12:48 PM I was into classic literature in high school and I'm re-reading some from my library. Just finished "Dubliners" by James Joyce. It's a series of short stories-1 of which titled, "Counterparts." They were OK. Grammatically rough, almost like a rough draft. I also have his "Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man". I'm reading it next and hope I like it better.
RE: Great Reads - indiscipline - 08-06-2011 03:45 PM I currently reading a book entitled: A Power Stronger Than Itself: The AACM and American Experimental Music. I finished another booked entitled: Pops: A Life of Louis Armstrong. I also finished Keith Richards book too. I've got about 6-7 other books on the pile to get to at some point..... Not enough time it seems, much easier to buy new ones. RE: Great Reads - BrianW - 08-11-2011 07:44 AM FYI Scythe, David Simon is married to award-winning author Laura Lippman, who writes very good mysteries set in the Baltimore area too. I've read several and enjoyed them (met her at the store, charming!). RE: Great Reads - Phillip - 08-11-2011 08:27 AM I just started Tim Dorsey's " Electric Barracuda". I am a big fan. His books are hilarious. RE: Great Reads - nettiesaur - 08-11-2011 03:51 PM Have we all finished "Eternal on the Water"? or is someone still reading it? RE: Great Reads - Scooter Britches - 08-11-2011 06:09 PM Anyone "judge a book by it's editing"? My boss suggested a book (Death by Meeting) to his top tier leaders saying it was an outstanding book full of great ideas. I took a peek at it and noticed 2 glaring typos right on the inside flap of the book jacket. I put it down. Wow, really? Our library didn't have it, and book buying isn't in the budget during "birthday" season around here, so I wasn't able to read it. Hopefully the next book, I'll be able to find. The level of polish in finished books has greatly declined over the years. Too many books being pumped out each year (actually called 'units'!) and not enough time or editors to go over them. I read mostly 'advanced' copies - meaning, to be read before it comes out to the public so you can say how wonderful it is. You see a boo-boo in one of those and check the finished book and sometimes the groaner is still there. Bagel/anyone USA - I have a copy ("Eternal") I can send if someone's needy. Drop me a PM with your address. RE: Great Reads - nettiesaur - 08-12-2011 03:21 PM (08-12-2011 08:55 AM)BrianW Wrote:(08-11-2011 06:09 PM)CanyonDancer Wrote: Anyone "judge a book by it's editing"?
