RE: Great Reads - Scythe Matters - 09-25-2011 05:17 PM Every time I come to the B&G I see another glimpse of what makes people good. What raises us above the meanness, the selfishness and ugly places the human being can sink to. What a special group of people we have here, under the auspices of a special man, due to the graciousness of another very special man. I am so blessed to know this group. Bubba's words brought me here, his books helping me through a very difficult time. To know that I'm not alone in that and to be able to share this feeling and pay it forward any way I can.... that's worth so much. Jetrow, your neighbor received such a wonderful gift! Please pass along my regards and best wishes
RE: Great Reads - Bageleth - 09-26-2011 09:13 AM That is so cool! RE: Great Reads - BrianW - 09-26-2011 09:22 AM Continuing those good mojo thoughts, here's one I just started, Wine To Water: A Bartender's Quest to Bring Clean Water to the World by Doc Hendley, founder of Wine To Water. From the book: He never set out to be a hero. In 2004, Hendley, a small-town bartender, held wine tasting events to raise awareness and funds for clean water projects around the world. He had planned to donate the proceeds through traditional channels, but instead found himself traveling to one of the world's most dangerous areas: Darfur, Sudan. Doc is a regular, rough and tumble guy who loves music, booze, and his Harley - but he also wants to help. W2W is a gripping story about braving tribal warfare and natural disasters, encountering fJascinating characters, and doing good. (available January 2012). Just finished over the weekend - folks, try and get your hands on this book or at least visit Doc's website winetowater.org and meet a passionate man providing the most basic need - drinking water - to the world. I am humbled. RE: Great Reads - nettiesaur - 10-01-2011 07:48 PM (09-25-2011 06:33 AM)Jetrow Wrote: Way too early for me to be up but dogs and ecstatic neighbours wait for no man. Out with the dog early this morning, not even a coffee first the evil creature, and Jay, the bloke next door I've mentioned here, comes rushing out to the lawns very excited. I just saw this, as I've been without proper "net" access for a week. How kind of Neil to do that, and how wonderful that it is helping your neighbor. I see that kindness in many folks here, especially lately.
RE: Great Reads - debskis - 10-02-2011 06:58 AM Just started Far & Away on Kindle...really wishing I had purchased the real version though b/c the pictures on the Kindle are completely inadequate. Happy to donate again to the cause though! RE: Great Reads - BrianW - 10-03-2011 07:36 AM The Infernals by John Connolly. This is a departure from his gritty Charlie Parker mystery series. Infernals is actually the second book in a series for young adults (but we old ones love it too!) featuring Samuel Johnson and his dachshund Boswell. In the latest since The Gates, our hero squares off against Mrs. Abernathy - the demon thwarted in bringing forth the Dark Lord by way of the Hadron Collider - after he falls through a portal into the dark realm. A fun read, full of cheeky humor and real science (love those notations at page bottom) coupled with a wonderful story about a boy coming of age and his faithful dog. RE: Great Reads - Scythe Matters - 10-03-2011 08:34 PM Feel free to grab it, Brian. I got it from the National Library Association website.
RE: Great Reads - BrianW - 10-04-2011 06:58 AM Thanks for the tip! We make a display here at the store every year and it never ceases to amaze me when folks see the titles banned and ask why, get the reason and roll their eyes. RE: Great Reads - smoker guy - 10-09-2011 07:48 PM Very cool about the book your friend got from Bubba. Its good to hear some good news for a change, instead of what's on the boob tube. Just started reading "The Monkey Wrench Gang" by Edward Abbey. I finally got around to this author after much procrastination. Very good so far, its got me interest truly pricked.
