RE: Great Reads - debskis - 12-01-2011 10:04 PM Just saw this post, and, if it's not too late (or too dangerous?) to chime in...I absolutely LOVE my Kindle! Mostly because I can never get my butt to a library on time to return anything, and I love literally never being without something to read! As mentioned, it's also great for travel, taking to the beach, on the boat, etc. I bought a cover separately that has a reading light integrated into it and runs on the Kindle battery, which, btw, lasts FOREVER as long as you don't leave the WiFi on. You can download samples before you buy, but, as someone said, there are MANY free titles as well as monthly specials for a buck or two for more current releases. I have yet to spend more than $5 or $6 per book, except for FnA, which I will purchase a REAL copy of soon to better enjoy the photos. I guess that would be my only complaint of the Kindle is that if there are photos, you might be disappointed in the quality of how they appear. Not sure how they would look on the color version though. All I can say is GO FOR IT if you haven't already! I was refreshing my memory before watching the A&E 2-night movie version. I looked at my list of fiction on my Kindle and noticed that I'd downloaded The American Book Of The Dead : Quote:Eugene Myers is working on a novel about the end of the world. Meanwhile, he discovers his daughter doing porn online and his marriage is coming to an end. When he begins dreaming about people who turn out to be real, he wonders if his novel is real as well. Eugene Myers may just be the one to stop the apocalypse. This history of the future covers every conspiracy imaginable: UFOs, secret societies, and World War III, as well as theories on life after death and human evolution by a writer whose last novel was called by Dogmatika, "A page-turner and an example of an effective piece of storytelling that should be envied." In the tradition of Philip K. Dick and Robert Anton Wilson, The American Book of the Dead explores the nature of reality and the human race's potential to either disintegrate or evolve. It's a bit scary but really great so far. RE: Great Reads - BrianW - 12-02-2011 11:27 AM E-readers are the new battlefield here in Indie BookstoreLand. They are obviously here to stay (as are we); our efforts are in making people aware of the fact that independents can now sell e-books via their websites for most e-readers, but not Kindles. For them, you must purchase your books solely through Amazon. Please think twice when purchasing a gizmo. Thanks! I myself prefer paper and ink. I know it steers you to Amazon stuff, but hey, they gotta lotta stuff! Plenty to keep the teen occupied. Plus, she might let me touch it every once in awhile! In the meantime I still like my ol' skool books, and now that I have a lil' break between T-Day and Christmas, I can get back to Roadshow. Speaking of Amazon, they make it too durned easy to order stuff (never shoulda put that app on my phone!), so a spur of the moment retail therapy session has The Masked Rider and the Taking Center Stage DVD making their way to my house as we speak [type]! OH! And I finally finished The Big Year, guess I gotta get my tushy over to the book club thread and post a review. Zoinks! No worries as far as I'm concerned; I still buy real paper books, too.
RE: Great Reads - BrianW - 12-08-2011 11:34 AM Update from computerland: there is apparently an app available for the Kindle Fire and Nook that makes it possible (though perhaps not easier) to download books non-Amazon. http://www.indieboundreader.org/reader Good luck! Just got my hands on a copy of Wild Thing, Josh Bazell's sequel to the award-winning thriller Beat the Reaper. Attention medical staff: This is a great read about a doctor using his training to save his life and escape the mob. That's a major broad stroke - I don't want to spoil the fun. Enjoy! RE: Great Reads - NWoBHM - 12-10-2011 02:39 PM Hi Rey, A little late on parade - but I am reading this book at the moment, per your recommendation, and it is a good read so far. I have got as far as "Freya" and the German radar bit. Funny we were going to call our second daughter Freya, until everyone said that was the code name for German radar, and thus she is now Olivia Freya....... RE: Great Reads - Scooter Britches - 12-13-2011 12:01 AM I can't even begin to describe how awesome this is. It's like a mini reading experience bucket list. It'd be awesome to get stuck in a cabin for like two weeks with a snow storm outside, a fully stocked bar, and all of these books...man, how epic! http://www.abebooks.com/books/alcohol-beer-wine-reading/book-booze-pairings.shtml#.TuZtnvEl3Kg.facebook RE: Great Reads - BrianW - 12-17-2011 12:56 PM (12-10-2011 02:39 PM)NWoBHM Wrote: Hi Rey,Hi guys, can I jump in and recommend Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand if you're still on the WWII plane kick? Staggeringly good. RE: Great Reads - NWoBHM - 12-17-2011 01:55 PM Thanks Brian, I am always on the lookout for new books and authors - I will look it up. |
