My husband has read all Bubba's books and pronounced this one the best. He wasn't a huge fan of the others but this one passed the "Dougie test." I loved all the pics and the writing style like speaking to a close friend. Can't wait for more...... RE: You KNOW that Bubba's on here... - MAL_ONE - 08-30-2011 05:17 PM I remember a little while back there was a shirt made to be gifted to the head chef. Anything ever come of that,,, or has it just been silence? RE: You KNOW that Bubba's on here... - Bageleth - 08-30-2011 05:20 PM I think that one had been ordered and sent. That's the last I heard, and I really didn't expect to hear anything after that. The T Shirt didn`t come back "Return to sender", so it arrived somewhere. I didn`t expect to hear anything though, and I refer to my post about playing the NEC once when Bubba and Co was there. For a long time a guy whom became a friend ran the TNMS web site over here (The National Midnight Star) a site dedicated to RUSH, and it cost him a lot personally in time and money. He also ran the European Rush conventions (probably at a personal loss). He did this for 10 years or so, around the time that Bubba and Co did not visit Europe, so kept a flame alight for them. We always hoped, (and it was always rumoured) someone would show up at a convention. The night I played the 1997 event, we got the double tragedy news about Bubba`s loss, and Princess Diana, and we all pretty much felt that would be it, we would never see them again. TNMS carried on however, as did the conventions. Eventually we learned of Bubba`s return to playing, and joy of joy recording and touring. My mate, (who from all accounts had contact with Pegi at SRO), was tipped the wink Bubba and Co would be touring and would play the NEC on a specific date in 2004 - this news was a year in advance from the date given. He set about booking an adjacent hall to the NEC for the convention for 2004, and eagerly looked forward to the event. It must have cost a fortune. I was playing, (and although "not in the know") I could see security was far tighter than any normal EurCon, I had to be vetted in by NEC Security, and the stage area had serious looking crowd control around it. I wondered whether someone would show up - we were literally next door to one another, and they would be setting up and sound checking as we were. In fact EurCon was scheduled to end at 7.30 (ish) to allow all the visitors to walk around to the main NEC Hall to watch them play. My mate was buzzing with the excitement. As the day wore on - nothing, my mates face more crestfallen with every hour, until it was obvious nothing was going to happen. I really felt for him. Now I am sure messages got mixed and missed, and it was probably a big ask for someone to pop over to a dedicated fan convention, but I always thought what would it have taken to ask someone to quietly pop over find my mate, and say, "keep it to yourself - but do you want to pop next door and meet them, and say hello" Anyway nothing happened, my mate pretty much gave up on the conventions and TNMS after that - a great shame as he had dedicated himself to it for 10 years or so. There was a rumour Alex had given him a PRS -but I doubt that, as I think he sold that some time ago. I dont mean to pour water on people`s enthusiasm, but trying also to say, no matter how much you wish for it, it probably is not going to happen. To quote something I have noticed from being on this site......."just sayin`" RE: You KNOW that Bubba's on here... - Mufasa - 08-31-2011 04:00 PM Samuel Clemens wrote, "It is the epitome of war, that young men should die." I correlate that loosely to the fact that individuals or groups that have a following, especially one that spans several decades, will inevitably fall victim to the, "Man - he/she/they let me down" factor. I can only imagine how your pal felt upon the realization of his particular event truth. I do feel for him, and anyone that has been subjected to this. I wrote here once, that in some instances it may be more safe to keep your distance from a person(s) that you truly admire, in the event that you are sorely disappointed upon learning that they are, after all... only human. As I also wrote, in all likelihood I would probably turn down the opportunity to meet Bubba, other than to say "Thanks - even if you stopped writing and playing and touring today, just... thanks." What would I possibly talk about that would interest him? Paintball? My extremely cool dog? The favorite pair of shorts that Cujo wears around the house? It would be a short conversation. In all honesty, I believe that I would rather simply hold to what I know; The words and music mean a lot. Always have. Always will. Besides, I'd kick his arse on a paintball field. Its my sincerest hope to just get that one chance Mufster....to say thank you, just once, would be all I need. Besides, I dont think he likes BIG guys on Harleys hanging around much..... But - maybe he already knows....
RE: You KNOW that Bubba's on here... - Scooter Britches - 08-31-2011 09:48 PM Hey now, didn't he ride with Dave the Bus Driver and his Harley a couple times? You never know...
RE: You KNOW that Bubba's on here... - Bageleth - 08-31-2011 09:51 PM So it seems that exceptions can be made when it comes to a Harley
RE: You KNOW that Bubba's on here... - Scythe Matters - 08-31-2011 10:51 PM Yeah, I didn't expect that we'd get a picture or anything. But it's good to know if something arrived. I, too, would love to have that chance... but somehow I think Bubba knows how special we think he is. Not because of *who* he is but because of what he's done. And while he may have done those things for himself, we are the lucky beneficiaries of his sharing those things. |
