I know most of the kids in public schools here in NY aren't required to take music classes. Its considered an elective. My kid's school DOES require it though. I think its based on budget. A lot of the schools can't afford to teach music classes anymore.

Music wasn't mandatory at my school either, elementary or high school, in fact, it was kind of discouraged, lest ye' be labled a "band geek"! I did take band in 4th & 5th grade, learned how to read music and play snare drum in the stage band. It wasn't until high school (13) that some friends convinced me to get a full set, which I took 3 lessons for, then just kept on playing and learning. I was the president of the Art Club then, so being in a "rock band" kind of covered up the whole geek/misfit thing, but deep down I still was one!(still am!)

Better a geek than most other labels. I was a cool geek (at least I think so though my son begs to differ) due to my involvement in the arts.

I played drums in band from the time I was 10 years old. Also trumpet and French horn. It was never required, but tough times have now done away with many band programs in schools. I always let my Geek flag fly! Cool

Had a rough day today. For a workshop tomorrow night (14 hour day again...) we have to bring text as it pertains to the new National Common Core Standards in ELA-say that 7 times fast-so I decided to bring Peart lyrics, some of the Popov biography, a classical composer related text and a smattering of other visual art and dance text. After I was done photocopying some of this (I think I broke Copyright law), I decided to go home in the cool damp autumn afternoon. I turned on XM and BANG, Spirit of the Radio was playing and it made my "afternoon" mood. I though it was cool given that I had just incorporated Bubba and the Polka Boys into some of the generally mundane aspects of my life. It was a turning point for the evening. Helped prepare dinner and cleaned the kitchen. Then of course all of that crumb cake...

I know, if you cut me right now I'd bleed insulin.
Two tums and when my head hits the pillow I'll be in "la-la land."

Hey, my warning level is only 0%. Should I do something stupid? I think I'm being punished. Either that or we "broke" CONTINUALLY OFF THREAD.

"Oh Bubba, patron saint of the Bar and Grille, invoke thine ear unto us-ward and grant that thy servant Brutus should set straight the crooked path of that evil thread, amen."
