It was never required, but tough times have now done away with many band programs in schools. I always let my Geek flag fly! I wasn't a Band Geek, but rather, a Choir Nerd. Still am, occasionally for church. Or late-night backup warbling for musician friends in neighborhood bars..... Ahhh, the Dichotomy of Me. (Suddenly I hear "Subdivisions" ringing in my brain...) RE: You KNOW that Bubba's on here... - RN-PRN - 10-03-2011 10:36 PM I was a band geek. I played the flute for many years. My daughter has it now and I will be teaching her how to play it within the year
RE: You KNOW that Bubba's on here... - Bageleth - 10-04-2011 12:57 PM I never was a band geek (homeschooling doesn't always offer that course), but I was raised by one, who was also in the marching band at her highschool. So we had a record or two of Marching band music to do the housework by.
RE: You KNOW that Bubba's on here... - old honda rider - 10-04-2011 01:37 PM As mentioned earlier our music instructor never had a drummer in our student band. I desperately wanted to do it but, alas, a tight-faced Ms Smith was in no mood to have proper percussion in the band. She always was kind of crusty. Not in a gentle crustiness that personified my paternal grandfather, but Ms Smith (yes, that was her name) was crusty right to her core. I was never one in the "in-crowd" thing. That was, until it was discovered that I played drums. Suddenly everyone wanted to be my best friend. Bah. Nothing had changed about me, just their perception. I should have enjoyed it. But I didn't. Frankly, it made me angry. Really cheesed me off. But that's a whole other thread. RE: You KNOW that Bubba's on here... - VincentUlyssis - 10-04-2011 01:46 PM I was a chorus/theory nerd but played percussion in bands and orchestras, so I was an "all-around" music geek. I had a band in HS and we played classic rock (Zep, Rush, Floyd, Bad co., The Who, Joan Jett, The Stones, etc), so that made me feel cooler. I too played and still play most of my music in church. As a "music director" I'm at all the marching band competitions as well as chorus, orchestra, band and jazz concerts. I love music but sometimes wish the music in my head would JUST STOP. ...just for a little while. Made for a rude awakening, ala Ren & Stimpy or the Foghorn Leghorn one where he grabs the dog by the tail and beats him on the behind with a 2x4!!! That's a great scene! I love it. Funny as heck! Bagel, you like spicy? Add some Tabasco to that hot chocolate on a cold day. That's how it was meant to be drank-ask the ancient peoples. On that note there is a Mexican dish: Chicken with spicy chocolate (sauce). Very different. RE: You KNOW that Bubba's on here... - Gungawoman - 10-04-2011 07:45 PM When I 1st started band I already knew how to read music-my Mom was a percussionist in Women's Symphony. I was the only drummer and all I had was my Mom's old snare drum. The band director wouldn't let me play it, because he wanted me to keep everyone else in time. I had to play the bass drum part---only there was no bass drum. He made me play a cardboard box with one of my snare sticks
