Just got a report of tornadoes about 50 miles away and the storm line is headed this a way. Just checked the radar, you're not kidding, quite an impressive line of storms over Iowa. Severe thunderstorm warnings all along the line. Supposed to get to me late tonight, I hate it when they come really late like that. RE: The Weather Thread - Boomer - 03-22-2011 07:44 PM I might shut things down here for awhile. I don't like having my puters on in thiese storms. I fried a whole computer system one time because I was working on a technical drawing at the office and lightning shot thru the roof thru the electrical lines and out the side of this poor unsuspecting computer. Scared the h-e double toothpicks right outta me. RE: The Weather Thread - RN-PRN - 03-22-2011 07:48 PM (03-22-2011 07:07 PM)boomer Wrote: Who ME???? I would NEVER stare up at a funnel cloud. I'd grab my camera FIRST! Forgot to mention that I did have my camera out and was videotaping it

RE: The Weather Thread - Boomer - 03-22-2011 07:53 PM What kind of surge protection do you have? I have a dual system of a batttery back up and a surge protection strip. But - I also have several million dollars worth of expensive CAD drawings on my systems as well as all my astronomy stuff. I cant afford to have one blown to bits by a bolt of 1.21 Gigawatts! RE: The Weather Thread - RN-PRN - 03-22-2011 07:55 PM We always shut down our desktops during the storms. I keep the laptop running, but not plugged in. RE: The Weather Thread - Boomer - 03-22-2011 07:58 PM Thats the beep - well, I'm shutting down. The weather radio is going off for our area. Lots of lightning with this line so I'm playing it safe. See y'all tomorrow! RE: The Weather Thread - 2Beers - 03-22-2011 09:11 PM Well again there is the sideways sleet and hail the size of small marbles. We got a bit worried as they hit the windows pretty hard and sounded as they might crack or break them. RE: The Weather Thread - NWoBHM - 03-23-2011 02:32 AM We had a telephone hit by lightening once - it was hard to recognise it was once a phone, just a pile of what looked shredded plastic, and burned wires. We NEVER use a phone now in storms, and switch off PC`s and TV`s. Although I notice the misses allowed me to carry on playing the ddrum once in a storm (loads of wires, cast aluminium pads, and POWER) all around me...........hmmm..... Lots of lightning with this line so I'm playing it safe. See y'all tomorrow! Have one of those weather beeper radios, eh? We have one here too. Except sometimes it drives us crazy on a stormy night, it keeps going off over and over, waking us up, for warnings that are not usually for our area. Especially the marine warnings for lake Michigan, that one going off at 3 am makes Her really mad. So just the other day I ordered a new weather radio, a Midland WR-300, it’s supposed to be a pretty good one. I have read it has the ability to set it to alarm for only the warnings you want to hear, like tornado and severe thunderstorm, and ignore the less important ones, like the marine warning. So we shall see how that one works once it gets here. I do think it’s important that people own and use these radios. Reading the reviews, I read of one person saying how it beeped waking them up, they hurried to the basement, then having their house hit by a tornado moments later, saving their lives. -Rey |
