RE: The Weather Thread - Rey - 07-12-2011 06:55 AM Dear friends at the Bar ‘n’ Grill, The storm has struck! I first saw it coming yesterday morning while watching the morning news. They showed a picture of the radar, and a large storm system in the shape of a hook shaped comma was rapidly approaching. Towns in its path were reporting a leading gust front of wind at 80 mph, which is near hurricane force, and the entire storm itself was charging across the state at 70 mph. The weatherman said that the area at the leading edge or point of the hook will receive the worst of the winds, and this was perfectly aligned to hit my town. I went outside briefly to have a look at the sky, and it was an eerie mass of boiling clouds, moving very rapidly across the sky. I stepped back into the house and then the storm hit. A massive wall of winds slammed into the house, and I could hear tree branches snapping off and hitting the outside walls. Since we have many old large trees in the yard, and several big picture windows that could implode inwards, I thought it would be best to ride this one out in the basement, so we raced down the stairs. We then huddled down there in the darkness, as the winds blew, the lightning flashed and the thunder boomed, and we could hear lots of strange noises and things hitting the house. I would wince every time something hit, not knowing what it was or what damage it was causing. The single light bulb we had managed to turn on flickered on and off several times, and then went out. It seemed like a bombing air raid was going on outside. Then the storm was over, and we came up the stairs to have a look around. Outside there were branches down all over the yard, and I had heard many bouncing off the house, but thankfully there was no damage to the house itself or the windows. But the power was still out, but I was not too worried as this sometimes happens and it usually comes back on within an hour or so. Not this time. The wind gusts were so powerful it knocked out power to nearly 800,000 people in the Chicago suburban area. The power company is calling it the worst outage in a decade. They are saying it could be days before power is restored. Days? So I am now entering day two without power. I am writing this story on the dwindling batteries of my laptop. No power at my house means I can’t run the well, so there is also no water. So all the modern conveniences are gone, I can’t take a shower, can’t flush the toilet, can’t cook a meal, all the food in the refrigerator is warming up and going bad. Yesterday it was nearly 90 degrees with high humidity with no A/C and no fans. I feel like I am living in a little house on the prairie 150 years ago. I am beginning to realize just how dependent on electricity I, or we, are. There is no television for the news, I can’t be on the computer, can’t listen to music. I almost feel completely helpless, and that is kind of pathetic, considering people in pioneering days live their whole lives without power. Hey, they were used to it! I feel myself transforming into some kind of primitive wild man. I feel the need to go out and hunt the gophers and squirrels in the yard with my pellet gun for food. Perhaps I will use their pelts to make a little hat I can wear while I hunt. I feel I will soon be joining the “Order of the Hand” (think SNL). Please, everyone, keep me in your thoughts, that the power may return soon, or it may be too late for me… Ah, I have picked up a stray wifi signal, batteries getting weak, cannot...hold on...for...much longer.... -Rey RE: The Weather Thread - NWoBHM - 07-12-2011 09:04 AM Rey - mate, you are going to have to start drinking your own urine to keep re-hydrated, that and fish eyes, apparently there is plenty of water in them, failing that an enema as fluids can be absorbed by the bowel...........Hang on there mate.......might be worth getting a little gennie for next time. RE: The Weather Thread - nettiesaur - 07-12-2011 09:27 AM Rey, I heard that your area got hit hard. My cousin lives near you and several of her friends had major damage to their houses...siding ripped off and such. That was one nasty storm! It's odd that we've had so many blow right to the south or north of us lately, and that they have been so strong! That freezer should be fine (as long as no one opens it) until you get the generator. I suppose ice is costing a pretty penny, but that could save the stuff in the fridge. I think a generator would prevent the eating of fish eyes and other sordid scenarios. Plus it would be a lot easier on the morale....sayin' RE: The Weather Thread - NWoBHM - 07-12-2011 04:14 PM Sorry Gunga you are right, I have been reading too much Bear Grylls (spelling), and got carried away. Seriously though I hope Rey is OK, he is a good bloke and I like his communications......... RE: The Weather Thread - RN-PRN - 07-12-2011 06:03 PM Hope everything going well, Rey. You need to look into getting a generator for times like these. RE: The Weather Thread - 2Beers - 07-12-2011 06:14 PM We also hope all is well with you and the family. When you are back, it will have to be storytime in the Bar. I'm not sure which is more disturbing. What you just shared, or that you actually have such detailed knowledge of it. LOL |
