RE: The Weather Thread - Mufasa - 12-03-2011 09:25 AM Explain that to me Scythe? RE: The Weather Thread - Boomer - 12-03-2011 02:40 PM A burn ban effects a wood stove?? What the?? I'm lost here Scythe.....toss this drowning guy some water! RE: The Weather Thread - Scooter Britches - 12-03-2011 11:26 PM Dunno if you guys have heard about the wind storm we had here, but there's another one on the way. We didn't have any damage here aside from a finiky garage door, but some folks didn't fare so well...lots of damage and tons of trees down. Some folks are still without power. However, it's a great opportunity to go find materials for making garlands and other holiday decorations!
RE: The Weather Thread - Rey - 12-03-2011 11:34 PM Yes I heard it was up to 150 mph in spots, are those the Devil Winds? Or not warm enough to call them that now. RE: The Weather Thread - Scooter Britches - 12-03-2011 11:56 PM Haven't heard a name for them yet, Rey, but the highest we got here locally was 102 mph. It was nuts. My office is in the windward side of my building and the winds were coming right across the flightline at us. You could feel the building moving! I knew it was going to be bad when I looked out side first thing in the AM and noticed they had CHAINED the F-16s down! Wow... What the?? Yep. A burn ban here extends to woodstoves since so many people use them in this area. Only if it's your primary source of heat can you ignore the ban and fire it up. Even though we use the pressed logs which send zero particulates into the air. They call them the "Santa Anna" winds I think CD, at least that's what the weather guru up here calls 'em! I remember them coming around every few years when we lived in Vegas, and yeah, a person could get sandblasted if they weren't carefull!
RE: The Weather Thread - Scythe Matters - 12-06-2011 09:16 PM Bubba has some info about those Santa Ana winds in Traveling Music which I found quite interesting. I have family in SoCa so I have felt those winds on occasion. But I tell ya, they are nothing like the sandstorms we'd get in Vegas (right Nawlins?). I remember in 1981, we had a huge haboob come through from East to West and as wide as the whole Vegas valley. I was in a Porsche 914 sitting at the "secret" airport, waiting for Ren Man to land when it came. I had driven with it at my back so I didn't see it until I was parked aiming in its direction. Man, I thought I was going to wind up in Oz! All I could do was roll the windows up, make sure the hardtop was secure and wait it out. It was so scary! ![]() Ren Man was up in a 737 in this thing. I'll get him to come tell his version of this.... which makes me faint to even think about!
RE: The Weather Thread - Scooter Britches - 12-07-2011 12:05 AM I'm not sure if these were the Santa Ana's...came from over the mountains to the east from CO. It was weird. Dunno, but I'm glad it's a freak occurrence. Been colder than (insert favorite metaphor here) lately. Today's high was 24. Super dry. Lots of folks getting bloddy noses around here from the frigid & dry combo...not comfy at all. Nice to not have to scrape frost off the windows though. I think I'm ready for spring! Either that or bring on the snow so we can get some moisture back in the air! RE: The Weather Thread - 2Beers - 12-07-2011 09:59 AM Sunshine with just a bit of snap in the air. It's 10 a.m. and I still have frost on the truck..... |
