FANTASY BANDS - VincentUlyssis - 10-02-2011 06:18 AM

There was a discussion in the "What we're listening to" thread about some great players and one fine fellow mentioned Return to Forever and I thought "Wow, now that was a fantasy combination." Kind of like three musicians we know. Then I thought about interchanging players. I wonder what kind of new sounds could come out of that.

So, I'll start. Remember this is FANTASY.

Band:

The What?

Pete Townsend: rhythm guitar, backup vocals
John Paul Jones: bass
Elton John or Billy Joel: Piano/keys, backup vocals
Satriani (Satch): Lead guitar
Neil Peart: Drums, percussion, chanting

I have to think carefully about a lead singer. Sir Paul at age 30?

Oh and let's fantasize about what age they are in the band.

Cool idea.

Let's see...
Rhythm guitar: Tom Petty
Bass: Geddy Lee OR Stanley Clark
Keyboards: Keith Emerson
Lead guitar: Satriani (good call on that one)
Drums, percussion: Neil Peart AND Martin Deller
Singer: Roger Daltry
Electric Violin: Jean-Luc Ponty AND Ben Mink (threw that in just for fun)

I would love to hear Bubba and the Boys with guest keyboard player, Tony Banks Big Grin

I was thinking the ELP Keyboard but I wasn't sure which was which. Right on!

How about Bela Flec thrown in?

Family Johnson, holy mackerel, have you heard the tribute to Hendrix? Unbelievable. With Mick Jagger at 27.

Keith Emerson is no slouch on the keys, for sure. But I would die to hear Tony Banks and Lerxst play together. Their styles are so similar: both play arpeggiated chords and odd chords.

How about RUSH for the rhythm section with the Transiberian Orchestra. Mark Wood on electric violin.

...or you could mix genres. For example, a Metallica folk album with Bobby Dylan jumping in on vocals.

Hmmm.... The Boys with TSO....that would be an interesting and most enjoyable concert. Just think of the light show.

RE: FANTASY BANDS - VincentUlyssis - 10-03-2011 08:14 PM

Yes, exactly.

Here you go...

Paul Stanley (rhythm guitar/vocals) and Freddie Mercury on vocals/piano (circa 1975)
Tom Schultz (lead guitar)
Paul McCartney (bass/back-up vocals and band/orchestra arrangements)
John Bonham (Drums)

Cool idea!! Since we're dreaming (and dont pinch me):

Percussion: Peart (duh)
Keyboards: Bruce Hornsby (I've always liked his style)
Guitar(s): Eric Clapton and Eric Johnson (does it really matter who's lead or rhythm?)
Bass: Les Claypool (so creative)
Vocalist: Seal (smooth and soulful)

Dont know what they would sound like but would likely be unique.

RE: FANTASY BANDS - N'awlins - 10-04-2011 11:48 AM

Hmmm, let's see, gotta' have 2 drummers, 2 guitarists, a bass player, singer, and keyboards...how's this for a mismatched group?

Stuart Copeland-Drums
Neil Peart-Percussion
Ace Frehley-Rhythm Guitar
Steve Vai-Lead Guitar
Les Claypool-Bass Guitar
Keith Emerson-Keyboards
Geoff Tate-Vocals

Not sure what it'd sound like, but I bet they would JAM!
