RE: How much do you usually tip?
Growing up in Las Vegas, tipping is part of our social upbringing. Everyone knows at least one person who relies heavily on tips so it becomes a personal thing. My late Father-in-Law worked as a Captain in the Hilton showroom, so my husband really had it ingrained in him. We feel that if we don't tip good service well, lightning will strike us dead. We tip between 15 and 20 percent.
That being said, if the service sucks, we will tip less and tell the Manager about it. ... in a world where I feel so small I can't stop thinking big! |

RE: How much do you usually tip?
I always over tip according to my husband, the work is hard and I've spent most of my life waiting on my family without any tips. Hell I'm lucky if their plates make it back into the kitchen when dinners done. Sometimes they finish eating before I even sit down. So every time I have the pleasure of dining out for a $110.00 dinner I give the waiter $40.00. The upside is I know the waitstaff in all my favorite restaurants and their service is always really good. The downside is I have to listen to my husband groan about a $40.00 tip!

With this in mind, there's something I've always wanted to do, and I hope I can accomplish it before long. Find a restaurant and scout it for a couple of week to determine which waitstaff do the most work with the least amount of fuss. Then one fine day go to a table and ask for him/her to wait on my table. Once the evening is done and things are winding down, leave a tip: a gold coin. For some reason, I've always wanted to do that. Losers visualize the results of failure and live in fear. Winners visualize the results of success and live in abundance. - me |

RE: How much do you usually tip?
Ok,, the big word here is -- usually.
I know that in many places, people who work for tips are paid lower wages. However, not here in California. They have to be paid at least minimum wage. That being said, I tip based on service. If it's good they get 20%, if its just ok, then 15%. Great = 25% ! Although, sometimes I'm generous and have given 15% to someone who deserved nothing! That being said, in these tough economic times my scrutiny has gone up, and the tippy slightly down. So many people act like you owe them a tip just because they are doing their job. Likewise, I also take into account the industry in which I'm tipping (it gets weird here in CA, everyone wants a tip for everything!). I mean, do we really throw money at the stage when RUSH gives us that stellar performance (maybe I'm on to something here)? |

RE: How much do you usually tip?
Tipping is something that I've had to learn how to do after I graduated and started dining out with friends and not my folks.
When I was growing up, I don't recall Kentucky Fried Chicken ever expecting a tip. I remember, after getting married, being surprised that my husband tipped the barber after haircuts. I had never heard of doing that, or tipping after massages or pedicures etc. I don't go to those places very often even now, so knowing how much to tip for those rare treats is still something I'm learning. A party without cake is really just a meeting |

RE: How much do you usually tip?
Ok, here is an update on the tipping thing. The wife and I go to one of
our favorite restaraunts for lunch. While we were there, the waitress politely ask if we need anything else. "As a matter of fact," I said. "We could use some more salsa." "No problem" she replied, "I'll be right back with that." Well, after waiting for a few minutes (glacing around the floor, she is no where in sight), I finally get up and make my way back to the kitchen to ask for more salsa, where I observe our waitress busily talking on the phone. Question: how much should I tip her now? |

She may have been on the phone, but for what reason? Does she have kids..one of them sick/hurt? Or was she just gabbing with a friend? All depends on the situation.
