RE: Great Reads
So far Brian - I haven't found "Fire Season" or "The Havana Room" or "Severence Package". Still looking locally though. Unfortunately our "library" was flooded out in 2008, so finding it there is out, but we do have a couple other options to pursue. If nothing else I can order online, especially "Fire Season" and "The Havana Room".
Finally finished Bubba's latest book. If you have half an adventurous bone in your body, or simply enjoy his columns on his web site- get the book! I was a little teary in a couple parts, but wont divulge those. I'd like it to be a surprise! For You Steve & Monica - Your Love will forever shine on in our hearts!!!

Here in NH they have a program called 'interlibrary loan', meaning if your library doesn't have it they can get it sent from another. Of course on-line is another option. As for Bubba, I do own a copy and enjoy randomly opening and falling into one adventure after another. Photos are great, but a slip-out cd soundtrack you can listen to as you read? Think I'm on to something. Where's my royalty cheque?? Hoobah-doobah |

RE: Great Reads
We have an independent store not far off. Also have a used half price store where I can find a lot of books, but they didnt have those particular titles. There are several colleges within easy range, and if that doesnt work, I can always hop on the Harley for a day trip to Madison, WI to a couple bookstores there.
But - until they get the new library built, I am a bit on my own. Good luck with your "idea"! For You Steve & Monica - Your Love will forever shine on in our hearts!!!

RE: Great Reads
I just finished "Secret Daughter" by Shilpi Somaya Gowda.
It's about the crisis in India, where there aren't enough women(just like in China) because a first born son is so valued, that they kill or abort female children. The lucky girls end up in orphanages. The book flips between the life of the birth parents in India who gave up their daughter rather than kill her, and the life of her adoptive parents in the U.S. It's very moving. I'd be glad to send it to someone to read if you would like. Just p.m. me. The Groundhog lied. Winter will continue for the next 6 months. |

RE: Great Reads
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. Two magicians each choose a student to train for a competition as to who(m?) is the better pupil - neither of them realizing that it will be to the death. Just started it last night, but it has shades of "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell" by Clarke and "Something Wicked This Way Comes" by Bradbury. The senior magicians strike me as God and Satan in on a private joke.
Wow! This one's on my short list for 'Book of the Year' along with "West of Here" (see earlier post). Hoobah-doobah |

RE: Book Nook
Love the Bev Lewis Amish novels! I was fascinated awhile back by the Amish way of life and found her depiction and detail of the culture very informative and compelling...easy reads but enjoyable!

Same themes, but a little more depth to them. There's more of the strife that went on in the history of the Amish, especially in her earlier novels. The Groundhog lied. RE: Great Reads
Cutting for Stone - Abraham Verghese
Intelligent, gut-wrenching, powerful...truly the best book I've read since, well, since Ghost Rider! I'm terrible at writing reviews, but seriously, if you want something written above an 8th-grade reading level that shakes you to your your core, this book is for you! Read the reviews and description on Amazon, then download it to your Kindle! I'm currently taking a break from intense drama, and just finished Fixing Freddie, the story of a 2x divorcee who buys her son a Beagle puppy that completely destroys their house, eats everything in sight, and goes beserko everytime she has a man in the house! Being a current (and often much to my displeasure!) Beagle owner, I had to read this book, and commisserated with the author on many levels! Fun, easy read, but not a total winner. 3 out of 5 stars for me. Will be getting Verghese's 2nd novel next! Anyone know if Bubba's latest is on Kindle and/or will be soon? Have not...will have to check her out!!! Thanks! (05-24-2011 08:31 PM)nettiesaur Wrote:(05-24-2011 07:54 PM)debskis Wrote: Love the Bev Lewis Amish novels! RE: Great Reads
When I look up the author on Amazon.com, only two titles show up for a Kindle version, "Ghost Rider" and "Travelling Music" but not his latest. I looked up a couple other references and didnt see it listed as a Kindle version either.
I think an audio cd of Bubba reading the book would be super cool too! For You Steve & Monica - Your Love will forever shine on in our hearts!!!
