Oh, how amazingly cool, Deb! We sometimes hear owls near the house but not nearly often enough. Maybe next time the moon will be out for you to see them!

RD, that cardinal is gorgeous! I had never seen one before I was in my teens. There were none in Vegas and I can't recall seeing any in other places. So when I saw my first one in my Grandparent's back yard in Arkansas one summer, I couldn't stop staring at him!

I am in northeastern South Carolina about 15 miles inland from the coast. I use a free program called PixResizer. I find it very easy to use.

Is that a Black Swallowtail? I'm not sure. The blue throws me off. That is beautiful where did you see it? In what part of the world are you?

VU I took a number of blue butterfly snaps at a golf course in norhtern MI. I heard, though not confirmed, it was part of the monarch species. I had never seen a blue one either.

On the owl-ther hand Deb I saw one perched on a wire in the UP. A very beautiful sight indeed I was driving and didn't get a pic. They are amazing creatures. We hear them randomly at night around here.

I hope I am not in violation for linking these videos I finally extracted from my phone to my PC and placed on YouTube. It is a male wild turkey that lives with his group of hens in the hardwood bottoms around the golf course where I work. I first saw him accompanying about a dozen hens last February. One day I walked to the edge of the woods where they had retreated when I approached. I have a turkey sound app on my phone, so I played the "fighting purr" sound over the speaker. He immediately came out of the woods and challenged me making the same sound my phone had made. For the next month every time he saw me he came up to challenge me. This made for several photo opportunities. Once the hens became receptive to him he forgot all about me. I turned my back on him one day when I had a chore to attend to and had no more time to "play". I paid the price and got a spur placed neatly in my gluteus maximus. I have not seen him this year.

I gave up turkey hunting a few years ago. Maybe I am getting soft, but I find it more and more difficult to kill animals. We eat a lot of venison, so this has become quite a dilemma. My lack of hunting last year is going to impact our normal protein intake this year, or at least our source of protein.

OMGOMGOMG! I was driving around the Ogden valley, and low and behold I saw a cute little raptory looking bird perched on a powerline. I stopped the car and grabbed the bino's...it was an American Kestrel! And he had a little fluffy snack in his talons! He watched me for a second then went about munching away on whatever it was then flew off to a tree a few yards away. I only had my crappy cell phone with me, so the pix are rather indistinct, but it was definitely an Am Kestrel (I learned my lession, Scythe!). Was the first time I've seen one in the wild and it was awesome! Smile

Great find!!! I would love to see one in the wild someday...raptors are just the bomb IMO!

Went on a 2-hour owl prowl the other day in the woods along the golf course we live on....what a gorgeous day for a hike!! The woods were so peaceful and I truly enjoyed my time among the trees, but the owls continue to be much more difficult to find than I imagined! Not one pellet or whitewashed tree trunk to be had! Where are all these owls I keep hearing at night?? The experts say they will roost during the day outside their nest, but dang if I just can't seem to catch a glimpse!

Ah well...I plan on returning to the Syracuse Airport this week where 3 Snowies have been in residence all winter...I'm sure that is exactly what the kids want to do on their week off from school!!
