RE: Gardening.....
I mentioned on the weather thread that we have had nothing but monsoon weather and cold temps for months. This has lead to a plague in sluggs (even got a news slot on the BBC), which have destroyed any attempts to grow anything this year.
Now sit back and watch those veggie prices spike at the Supermarkets....... She looked at me and rolled those big brown eyes and said, "Oh, I would do it all for you, `cos you`re a Rocker" |

Quote:We put down Deadline or, if I'm feeling evil, salt Mrs NWo has been trying all sorts - even copper plating around the base of the planters which apparently put the blighters off. She looked at me and rolled those big brown eyes and said, "Oh, I would do it all for you, `cos you`re a Rocker" |

You could also fill a shallow dish (or dishes) with cheap crap beer and set them out in the garden under shelter: slugs love the smell. Salting slugs isn't good for whatever else you might eventually want to grow in the soil. Seems our heatwave is about to break here as well: I'm about to go for a walk and along with the bumbershoot, I'm actually going to wear a long-sleeved shirt, for a change.... ---- I'm not one to believe in magic, but I sometimes have a second-sight.... |

RE: Gardening.....
Well cucumbers are coming in by the dozens...took a bag full to my parents today. They loved them. They just moved back from Florida and my mom hasn't grown any veggies in years. She can't wait for our tomatoes...

RE: Gardening.....
This year I tried to plant flowers that would be vibrant right up to and beyond frost. The begonia, marigolds and alyssum are still in full bloom but I'm not certain what they'll look like after this snowy storm.
By the way, did it cross anyone's mind that this wonderful thread by bagel may have inspired a beautiful song? I thought of it immediately when I heard it. It may have been Bad Company or Foghat or something...I forget who. "Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then." "Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup." "Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end." |

RE: Gardening.....
I'm not nearly as ambitious as Counselor, but today was seed starting day here on the Mountain. I started 100 seeds in the back room of my barn. 7 kinds of peppers, 7 kinds of tomatoes, egg plant, and artichoke. I ran out of heat mats, so after all those get started, I'll do the next round. Much of that will be asparagus for my new bed (you can never have too much asparagus!)
I spent a fortune on a good greenhouse a few years ago. Many of the veggies will go in it. Some (that hopefully, the gophers don't like) will go in the ground. I'm making a new greenhouse for all the tomatoes and the artichokes. At this point, it's looking like about $100.00 worth of materials. Way affordable! I'll have to recover it every 3-4 years, but it will still be more cost-effective than my other greenhouse. Come on Spring!
If I'd known you were French, I'd have worn galoshes... |
