I built two cold frames from wood salvaged from our deck rebuild this past summer. I checked them today (its 40 and snowing) and the dandelions are apparently liking the "warmer" climate in there. I have never used a cold frame to protect seedlings so I am hesitant to put them out quite test, but it may be a sign that, that time is drawing ever closer. ![]() With over 200 seedlings to harden off, that time cant come soon enough before my basement is officially overrun! RE: Gardening.....
Well, with fresh snow on the ground this morning, the head gardener(my roommate) in the house declared it to be too cold to use the cold frame, and went out and bought a heat pad and grow light for the basement workbench.
Last year they went on a shelf in the kitchen, but with a new puppy in the house who chews everything, they need to go in a safer area. Whenever it decides to warm up around here(above freezing), they'll go out in the cold frame. One of my relatives in the U.P. of Michigan just made a greenhouse in her "sun" room. They are supposed to get dumped on by snow today(7 to 14 inches). I'm sure the plants will be pretty well developed before they go outside! The groundhog lied, big time! The Groundhog lied. |

I hear you, Nettie! I have over 200 seedlings that I started in the barn this year with heat mats. I'd been starting them in the house in previous years, but Monkey Moo began eating----and consequently puking----my peppers!

RE: Gardening.....
Has anyone been able to put plants in the ground yet? This WACKY weather is going to drive me and my seedlings, who are yearning for root expansion, crazy! Many went out into the cold frames today. The tilling was completed yesterday, now if we could get some consistent weather, the ground would warm up and all would be good. Thinking of planting the peas, carrots and beets tomorrow...

RE: Gardening.....
It has been to cold out to put our plants in the cold frame. They are on the
dining room table going bonkers in the sun. Maybe next week it will be warm enough. The Groundhog lied. |

RE: Gardening.....
All my stuff is still in the barn.....next week, they get moved to the greenhouses, but not planted yet. We might still get some freezes. It's been so windy, I don't dare plant any seedlings in the ground. Hopefully, in a couple of weeks, I can do some direct sowing into the garden! Finally!

RE: Gardening.....
I'm reading these posts and thinking what crazy weather. This time last year it was very dry in NH, and we were two to three weeks ahead of schedule. I'm looking forward to strawberries!
