OMG!

My oldest daughter talked me in to watching Donnie Darko a couple months back. That is one strange flick - good but a little wierd.

We picked up the BluRay of "True Grit"....my kids kept pointing at me for some reason when Ol Rooster would get that mean dirty look on him. Dont know why.

Gio, Cap and I are watching "Karate Kid" with Jackie Chan. Not as bad as i thought it would be! Anyway, I'd normally be in bed by now but I hear Bubba's gonna be on Letterman ,tonight. I told all my friends... Jobee, Mike S, my brother Joe, Mike who plays in our team at church, Christine who worked for the labels and knows almost everyone in the business but has chosen to do accounting in our school district-but is the biggest rocker I ever met! I'm sure there was someone else...oh yes, my secretary who could give a rat's arse about anything to do with Neil or his counterparts. So here we are waiting up to see our friend take an important step with millions of viewers simultaneously inspired by the skill, technique and creativity of a true artist. A renaissance man in the truest sense, writer, creative artistic conceptualizer, master musician (drummer, but a TRUE musician), chef (or cooker), poet, free agent, man of business, ideas, new adventures, living life. So for just about no one would I stay up to this hour, but to witness this honor bestowed upon our friend makes me feel so good for him.

Last night I experienced that rarity-of-rarities: I channel-surfed onto an absolute fave and it wasn't ten minutes before the end. It was "Underworld," and it was at the very beginning. OOOoooyeah!

"Underworld" is one of those movies that sucks you in and makes you watch no matter how many times you've seen it, because it's just great storytelling and great filmmaking. And it's got Kate Beckinsale in spandex.

My litmus test for an excellent movie is if I find myself flashing back to scenes and characters from it days after the fact, at the most incongruous times. 'Been having UW flashes all day...

That whole "vampires vs. werewolves" schtick has been beaten to a bloody pulp in both books and movies in recent years, which makes UW all the more outstanding IMO. A film is only as good as the story at its core, and this one has great internal logic, compelling characters, phenomenal casting and acting, inventive and beautiful production design despite the overtly malevolent-universe premise. The sequel, "Underworld: Evolution" was as good if not better; the third one, "Rise of the Lycans," was pure and utter crap, presumably the work of a different writer/director? ('Have to check IMDB but it has to be.)

Anyhow, if you're gonna watch any monster movie, "Underworld" is the top of the heap - and probably the single best vampire flick since Lugosi.

With the passing of Peter Falk, I have to make sure everyone knows about my favorite film he was in...



He played the "Sam Spade" character, Sam Diamond. He is perfect here, doing a Humphrey Bogart-ish kinda guy.

A few memorable lines:

Sam Diamond: Locked, from the inside. That can only mean one thing. And I don't know what it is.

Dora Charleston: Mr. Diamond, there's a bullet hole in your jacket.
Sam Diamond: You should see the other guy.

Lionel Twain: That drives me crazy!
Sam Diamond: Sounds like a short ride to me.

Dora Charleston: Is he dead?
Sam Diamond: With a thing like that in his back, in the long run, he's better off.

Sam Diamond: The last time that I trusted a dame was in Paris in 1940. She said she was going out to get a bottle of wine. Two hours later, the Germans marched into France.

I saw "Bridesmaids" last night, which was a little raunchy, but very funny.

RIP Peter Falk. I love the move "The Princess Bride".
