Ooyeah! Travel-related tuneage! I gotta story... In January '98 a guy I worked with walked up and said "You'll never believe what I just did - I got a round-trip ticket from Portland to Paris for $350." I asked for his travel agent and got a ticket for the same price on the same flight and tagged along. We were only there for five days, but for a North Dakota farmboy, born & raised, it was like stepping onto an alien world.

Anyhoo, I turned on the tube in the hotel to see what Parisians were watching, and after cracking up to French cartoons for awhile (all cartoon villains, regardless of nationality, have S-curve moustaches and start every sentence with the word "SO-o-o-o-o" - in this case "ALOR-r-r-r-s,) I channel-flipped to a music vid program and about dropped the remote. Here was this stunning woman singing a song that sounded like it originated on some world of impossible beauty, maybe orbiting Centauri Prime or something, and I just stood there bug-eyed, and maybe with my tongue hanging out. It was the vid for jazz/pop singer Patricia Kaas' song "Les Lignes De Nos Mains," (I recommend turning it to "11" before clicking.) For understandable reasons I spaced out writing down the data, had no clue who it was or what the title was (I thought she was singing about Vouvray - ) and had to spend the last night there watching TV and waiting for it to come back on. It did.

I dreamed of blondes in purple cowboy hats for months after that, and roughly 18 months later found myself standing face to face with Kaas, shaking her hand whilst my sneakers melted to the floor.... Life is a strange & wonderful adventure sometimes.

There's also a food tie-in, and I'm not making it up, 'swear: That song will always remind me of standing on a Parisian street in a light misty drizzle, munching on an exquisite ham sandwich - because that was what my bud & I were doing just a few minutes after we touched down in the hotel and I heard the song.

We walked past a hole-in-the-wall deli, ducked in and ordered, expecting some quick & simple grub, and the flavor...!! It could only be described as a saporal orgasm. And this is just a ham and cheese sandwich, mind you.

Them French people are serious about their food. They will also stare at you like you're crazy if you stand around on the sidewalk eating.

To my added delight, I later found the song's lyrics to be a nifty little statement with some edifying and valid philosophy in it - blowing away determinism with some simple volition. Did I mention I love this lady? I love this lady.
