RE: You KNOW that Bubba's on here...
What HE said Bagel - What HE said!!!!!!
Ya know, there are a lot of folks who dont know who Bubba is, but if you dont know who Rush is - well - I just don't even know how to respond to soemthing like that. It defies belief to me. How can you have a group, well versed learned musicians who have been putting out music for DECADES and still doing so, and not ever heard of them? Its not like jazz music. The great Buddy Rich is a fine example, but if I were to ask if you had heard of Spyro Gyra, or perhaps Dizzy Gillespie, maybe even Muddy Waters or Miles Davis - all truly great jazz or blues artists, but not everyone has heard of them. There are a couple things you never loan friends. One is booze, another is your Harley. Learned that the hard way in the navy. Loaned a guy some Yukon Jack, and he decided to drink the booze and left me the empty, but that was when I was young and dumb......not like now! I saw Buddy Rich once..........on "The Muppet Show", LOL I grew up with a father who listened to Rod Stewart, Fleetwood Mac, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendryx, and Pink Floyd (when I visited him) and a mother who listened to Henry Mancini, Shostakovich, and soundtracks from several musicals from the 60's as well as Bill & Gloria Gaither. I started out living in the country (moo!) and then later in a mobile home park where 90% of my neighbors were well into their 70's. So I really never had any exposure to the music of "the band". Years later after I was married, I saw one of my husband's albums (I almost said "old" there) and I remembered having seen it in a store when I was a kid. RE: You KNOW that Bubba's on here...
The fact is, with the exception of a few well known Rush songs on the radio in the classic rock genre, most people have no idea who Rush is and they're not interested in knowing either. Most women I know detest Geddy's voice. It's like some kind of frequency that pinches a nerve in their brain or something. My wife is most irritated by his vibrato. Initially I wasn't sure if I liked them back then either. I remember feeling that Alex's solos were at times atonally dissonant with unusual intervals. It was like nothing I ever heard. Now I appreciate the complexity, skill and new layers of sound that were created.
A lot of people like pop. I don't get it, but I don't think they're entirely stupid. Rush is an acquired taste. I love the aforementioned bands. They wrote good songs. Our favorite band however wrote epics, so I don't expect most people to understand them. It makes it even more special to me. Rush is MY band. |

RE: You KNOW that Bubba's on here...
Gee.....all my parents ever listened to was Olivia Newton John, Neil Diamond, and Roger Whitaker. ICK!
Its all good. I never expect the younger generation to really know who the boys are. I mean....unless you can stand the drivel on pop rado, or like hearing the same note played over and over to some imecile screaming so that Bulgaria could hear him, you will never understand groups like Pink Floyd, Rush, The Yardbirds, The Doors.....heck even trying to explain the Police or Sting is mute point. But - I dont think its really "acquired". My wife can't stand the guys, but its because a coupel friends of hers only played their cassettes when she was younger. Has nothing to do with Ged's voice. My wife is very supportive of my pursuits of music, just not that into the boys is all. My oldest daughter, however - if she don't stop "borrowing" my cd's......!!!!!! My husband is a fan of Neil Diamond, and I think he acquired that from his parents. I only liked ONJ in "Grease". I probably also fit into the category "wife of a Rush fan". I'm starting to recognize a song or two if the CD is in the player in the car when I turn it on. A party without cake is really just a meeting |

I got a lecture on the finer points of their skill, their musicianship, and just how freakin’ wonderful they are. And then he made me listen, and told me what to listen for. And that was it. I was hooked. I get a little put out when I hear that “Chicks don’t get Rush”. I get it just fine, thank you very much. But I do agree with your wife, Getty’s early voice does put my teeth on edge. I love his voice now. It has a lot more depth to it than it did before. "This is a standard queen outfit, then?" |

Oh my! The first time I heard Geds voice I was 10. My entire world changed within minutes. Geddys voice is the purest and most articulate phonation in the history of Rock and Roll.
Just wait and see Don't talk smack about Total!! |

RE: You KNOW that Bubba's on here...
Dear me.
I was 15 actually the first time I heard the voice of Ged....and it only took three bars of "A Farewell to Kings". Does anyone remember the movie "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and what he did when he had a drink of whiskey? That was me when I was "struck by lightning"! And that was just the first three bars! I spoke with another "virgin" today at the YMCA where I am starting my own workout routine. Bad knees and prednizone. Anyway - the girl behind the desk looked about 30 or so, and the radio was playing "The boys" so I asked her if she knew who it was. "Isn't this that boy band from New Zealand - like from the 90's?". Nevermind! These people must be everywhar! For You Steve & Monica - Your Love will forever shine on in our hearts!!!
