RE: Scotch Whisky Observations
RM, since you mention it, since tomorrow is my day off, and since...well there it sat on the bar, I'm indulging in a wee dram of Lagavulin 16, still my favorite of the Islay malts. It's got the heavy-duty peat characteristic to that island, but there's a complexity and richness of balance ('don't know how else to describe the sensation,) that I haven't found elsewhere.

[P.S. - ...Written to the sound of Kanon Wakeshima's "Still Doll," via my Japanese-girly-punk 'Net radio station. It's the kind of song that would've gotten some damned strange looks - and possibly some physical violence - from my high school heavy metal buddies if they'd caught me listening to it, but... that there girl plays a mean cello.]

I quite like Lagavulin.

We have a replacement Balveni now and I'm waiting for another month or two when the new law in Washington takes effect. We have thrown over our state liquor store system for Supermarkets and Costco. We'll see what happens to the prices. The sales pitch Costco used in thier 20 million dollar ad blitz sold it as lowering cost and giving more tax revinue to the state. I have my doubts.

Yeah - good luck with that. I never believe anyone who says we'll LOWER prices. At least you got a replacement Balvenie!

RE: Scotch Whisky Observations
Recently returned from a month in Nassau (and two fabulous days in Matthew Town, on Great Inagua).

Wow! Great Scotch at terrific prices!

I brought back a Bunnahabhain 1997 limited bottling that is just freakin' amazing. Yes, I've had the Macallan 18 and 25, but I'd put this up against both of them any day.

Not sure whether it's available, or at what cost, here in Canada, but it was just $50 (Bahamas$ = US$) at the shop in Nassau.

When I was in the navy I spent a couple weeks at Andros Island in the Bahamas. Sent back 3 cases of stuff....rum 3 different kinds. Spent maybe $40 on the lot of it. One guy sent home a couple cases of scotch to his dad. I have never heard of that particular scotch, though. Makes me curious!

Also got to Harbour Island and Spanish Wells on Eleuthera, but sadly not Andros -- next time!

It was only luck that I got to Inagua: it's a pretty isolated place. Maybe 4 or 5 miles of paved roads, the rest is gravel. But the wildlife is gob-smacking! 80K wild flamingos. Roseate spoonbills. Brown pelicans. Far too many egrets.

Sorry -- it was an exciting place. Ahem, back to talking about fine wee drams.

Bunnahabhain is one of the smaller Islay distilleries, and my personal fave, although I wouldn't turn down a Laphroaig or Lagavulin, y'know?

Congratulations to you Washingtonians on achieving what I hadn't thought possible, particularly these days: A rollback of the Nanny State in favor of, like, letting us kiddies ride without the training-wheels. They had the Stalinist liquor stores in bOregon too when I existed there, but California doesn't have that problem - kids can sell Everclear at corner lemonade stands here, I think.

Hey, anyone else had a chance to try Laphroaig's "Cairdeas" brew? To my amazement there was exactly one (1) bottle left at Mission Liquor off of Hill and Washington in Pasadena, so I snagged it and bagged it. I'm sipping a wee dram right now (!&%@&!# insomnia...) and it's pretty damned gnarly even by Laphroaig standards. I don't pretend to have either an educated palate or the descriptive lingo, but I'm getting a huge nutty flavor along with the usual heavy iodine and heavier peat, in a brew that's just incredibly raw and in-your-face. I've been trying to get "notes" from Scotch and wine for years, but I think I might be going deaf... No matter, taste is the important thing here, not sound.Rolleyes

RE: Scotch Whisky Observations
Sorry SC. I looked and shopped and begged but have not located a bottle, and all the ones on ebay were pretty overpriced. I have a friend at work who has even suggested if I can to locate two bottles and she would take one off my hands, but so far neither of us have located that particular vintage.

Boomer, it's just a lightning strike / luck-of-the-draw / RTB chance thing - and I was in the right place at the right time. I paid around $70, which I think is the same they charge for Laphroaig Original Cask Strength. I would just say to try stores everywhere you find them and keep your eyes open - you never know where it might turn up. Tellya what, since I don't particularly care for the stuff, if I find another one at Mission I'll snag it too and pass it on to you for face value. But since it's in limited supply from the outset it's unlikely. You never know though.

RE: Scotch Whisky Observations
I've got scouts around town looking, Ive been looking, even looking out of state, and nothing yet. Its not exactly a well stocked item, and to be honest, Iowa is not really KNOWN for stocking one off custom vintages like this. Case in point: Macallan Cask Strength. Our state refuses to allow it to be stocked in stores because its not "pasturized". Its a potential health hazard. According to them. This one might not be any different. I'll keep looking, but if you see it, I'm there!!!
