Strange sayings that parents had.......
This is just a silly one. My mom would say some odd things to me in order to either keep me in line or just to describe something silly that I did. So did you're folks or relatives say things to you that were odd and did you ever wind up saying it to your kids?

If I was acting or said something silly, my mom would say "You're full of prunes". Well looking back, what does that really mean? I mean, considering the affect that prunes can have on a person. Of course, knowing my mom, that thought probably had never occurred to her.

If I was at my maternal grandparents' house, their motivation to get me to clean my plate was to tell me to "fill that hollow leg". The one time I said that I didn't have one, my grandpa took the carving knife to my leg and tried to convince me that he was going to cut it open and check. He never did that again, and it certainly left a memory and a lesson (don't sit next to Grandpa!).

Anyway, those are just a few that I remember

Grandma always said "What a doughhead!" when someone did something stupid.
I'm sure she knew some choice swear words, but was too much of a lady to say them.

Dad always said "Eat it! It'll put hair on your chest!"
Just what I want Dad, I'm a girl.Tongue

Ha! And I thought mine was the only family that said such a thing!

Yes, I was on the receiving end of such exhortations too. Being a guy I suppose it wasn't entirely out of line; I knew the hair would come whether I wanted it or not. But he only said that when there was something purely awful. Liver & onions, overboiled brussel sprouts, other things that are best described as "icky."

They also used to try to get me to stop crossing my eyes (why I actually did that is lost to history), by saying, "If you keep doing that your eyes will stick like that." That never made much sense to me. See, I had an old Jerry Lewis comedy record and the cover art had the aforementioned Mr Lewis with his eyes crossed. If he could do that for years, my logic told me that my mom was full of, well, prunes.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." - Mark Twain

My mother would try to get me to eat liver and like it by saying, "It'll turn your blood blue! Don't you want to have blue blood". Uh, no, I didn't. There was absolutely nothing that she could say that would make that liver any more palatable, LOL!

I sure am glad I wasnt the only one that had a disdain for all sorts of internal organs and liver was DEFINITELY at the top of my parents list!!! I dont care how much ketchup, onions, garlic, bacon or booze you put on it, its still LIVER its still an internal organ and its not meant for human consumption.

One my dad always had to have is liverwurst. I mean that stuff makes me throw up just smelling it. I hate that stuff, but my pappy....oh nooooo we gotta eat tubes of it for the Super Bowl one year and MAKE the boys eat it. Eat it or else. Or else what....I dont remember anything after that.

When I was little, I actually did like liverwurst........until I "lost it" as a teenager. I haven't touched it since.

Anytime we had chicken, my mom would cook up the gizzard and heart too and try to get me to fight her for those like her sister did when they were little. I told her every time that she was more than welcome to have those. My other aunt, will still order deep fried gizzards with ranch dressing at her local bar. That is just not for me. To this day, my kids have never had liver, or any other animal organ.

Oh, I just remembered another item that my mom used to cook: Cow's tongue! Ew! She didn't have any words of motivation to get me to eat that.

"Michael - leave Tasha alone!" Ok, well - maybe it's not strange... but I heard that a lot.

One time my mom just HAD to make cow heart. Saw some article in a magazine that it was good for posterity or something....reminded me of trying to eat the saddle off a horse.

Mom: Its cow heart and your going to eat it
Me: Oh GROSS mom thats disgusting!
Bro: You can't be serious!!!
Dad: Boys you will eat it and thats final!
Mom: I slaved over the stove for ovewr an hour and you will EAT THIS!
Me: Its YUKKY!
Dad (to me): Jesus Chr*st sit down and eat!
Bro: I ain't eatin' dat.
Dad (to bro): Gawd D*mmit I said sit down and EAT or you both will get the belt!
Bro (to me): How did you get to be Jesus Chr*st?
Dad (to bro): Gawd D*mmit I said eat NOW!
Me (to bro): Hey at least you get to be.......

We never ate internal organs ever again, but I didn't get to sit down for a few days either!

Sounds like the first(and last) time my mother made polenta.
Kids: What's that?
Mom: Polenta, you'll like it.
Older sister(age 7): ewwww
all of us little kids(6, 5, 4, 3): eww

and Mom ate it by herself. We had the vegetables that were supposed to go with it.

Arrogant Bastards in Mamby Pamby Land

Tissue?

Also, above and beyond strange things like tissue that my parents had,

they had these special holiday napkins...

to nest in the oven-baked spiced goods the tourists find sensitive to their knows what's better than making a muffin look better. The napkin was black of course. Breads, rolls, pilgrims peace pipes of corn cob good goobbeldy goodliness, thank you kindly ma'am, mmmm, and please, more stuffed possum, yumm, and gravy slippery like the rope over the river's ledge.

Yet it digress...

What do I miss? it asked arrogantly with consternation. having thanksgiving leftovers is a blessing for all. perhaps i shall mince it all and put it into plastic bags, then into the freezer. lay it flat so that once your galloping gobbler is ready, you can file it in the freezer, just like Tony Curtis' daughter, better known for her monster films. Wanda irregardlish, the fishiness had subsided, wheel to the shoulder, and in reverse from over the river and through the woods and granny's pantry and all dat... it reminded me of the smell of pumpkin pie, and the smell of bubbles....

and then the triptophan took hold... and went into a dream aHHHHHHHhh look at alll the lonely people..

purple p[eaople eater: pumkin poe ) << teenybooper type too

tht being said, i miss.... scented bubbles
let me rephrase that....
