RE: Saturday, July 2nd @ The Gorge
Band geek Aloha High School. I admit it. I played everything from trombone to tuba baritone french horn....whatever the director needed. Played trombone mostly, and did get a letter from the folks at the All McDonalds American Band, but they wanted me to pay for all my expenses. I started learning to play drums on my own, but then I joined the navy and haven't touched an instrument since. Thats been one of the biggest regrets of my life, and something I am hoping I can change before too long.

The last time flood waters were that high I remember they had to cancel some of the ships coming in. No ADOPTIONS? You gotta be kidding me!!! Thats like a Portland tradition! Not surprised at no escorts. After the USS Cole incident the navy stopped allowing anyone near their ships. Safety measure but its just too bad because for towns like Portland New York Seattle - that was part of the fun. What a shame.

I think that there is a "retired" or "decommissioned" submarine that is docked on the waterfront, that allows visitors to climb down and check it out. At least there was about a year ago when a family I knew went there and took a lot of pics which they posted on FB. I wouldn't mind seeing it. I'm not sure if my family would want to.

Bagel, if we are thinking of the same thing, the sub is at OMSI, The Blueback...

Yes - its the same boat that "The Hunt For Red October" was filmed with. Remember the scene where the sub comes shooting out of the water? Thats the boat they used. I took my daughter down to see that boat before we left in 1999. I ended up knowing more about that boat than the tour guide/former old salt diesel sailor knew, but thats not saying much. It is a neat tour though, and I highly recommend it - unless you dont like small spaces.

If I ever am able to see it, I'll probably be taking that tour by myself. My husby doesn't like small spaces, my daughter has no interest, and my son will probably be afraid that it'll leave with us in it or at least launch a torpedo.

Uh oh - then maybe not! There was an older woman in the tour I went on that had to get out. Apparently her husband had passed away and she wanted to see the kinds of conditions that a submarine sailor endured while at sea.

Maybe instead of the submarine - you should take them in to the laser light show. If they still have that. I took my daughter in there and the lights got her so dizzy she started feeling a little nauseated!

I think that OMSI is currently advertising a laser light show, featuring Pink Floyd (what other kind of laser show is there?). We may do that kind of thing when we have the kids with us.

I think that Multnomah Falls has caught my husby's interest for this trip. He also mentioned riding the glass cable car that leads up to OHSU. We're only going to be in Portland for the day of and after the show. I'm also thinking of trying to see the houses in Milwaukie that my grandparents and aunt & uncle lived in while I was growing up...........in the daytime (last year we found them but it was after dark and I couldn't take any pictures).
