Two things on those: If you use near field objects such as the sign you block the direct exposure of the sun to the processor. Obviously that alone will melt about anything known to man. If you look at other images such as mine you will generally notice that most folks who value their equipment always use something near to block the direct sunlight. Second is with the haze being what it was you can use a ps camera or any digital camera to take images like that, but again the best advice is if you do want to take those kinds of shots, either use a blocking reference such as the sign or even your hand will work, and make sure there is enough haze to help block the direct sunlight. If you really want to have fun - get yourself a $6000 Hydrogen Alpha filter for your telescope and take some really neato shots of the surface of the sun.

I never recommend an amateur shoot the sun, though. Your camera will melt like wax in a bonfire.
