RE: The Bar
"ring, ring" goes the breakfast bell. I've got breakfast fixings of coffee, pancakes, bacon, sausages, hash browns, fruit And... Bloody Mary fixings as well. We had a friends get married yesterday and this morning we made breakfast for the newlyweds.

RE: The Bar
There is a bar in my hometown in Michigan that has been a local establishment for DECADES, and the clientele has not changed since I was a kid growing up there. During the day, it is a great place for burgers and nachos and a place I wouldn't hesitate to take the kids, but at night is a different story all together! Whether it is bike-night or karaoke night, the regulars are there and they occupy the same bar stool or corner booth week after week. Comforting at some level, but, then again, I think, "wow...these people have NEVER left this small town, and have never experienced anything beyond the same people and high-school drama of the past 20+ years...I could never have stayed here!" Part of me is envious of the deep, life-long friendships that some of them have maintained
all these years, but then...I have new friends from these new places...am I richer, or are they??? "Whoever said 'Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels,' has never tried bacon..." Unknown |

RE: The Bar
One of the best things about our UK visit was going to Pubs. We ate at them quite often, in many different places. We were always greeted with warmth and welcomed with smiles. There really is no phenomenon like them here, at least not in our part of the country. I wish there was because I had some excellent meals and company in them.
So in that spirit, I've made a batch of pasties: ![]() Have a pastie and a glass of ale and enjoy!
... in a world where I feel so small I can't stop thinking big! |

RE: The Bar
A delectable meat pie! Where have these been all my life?! Once I have made them, and I WILL make them, how are they garnished? I read on the Pastie thread that they can be made with left over meat... I made Short ribs this weekend and WAS going to make a quick stew with the leftovers NOT ANY MORE!. Good thing I saved the gravy too!

RE: The Bar
Funny you should mention pasties as the ConDem party got into some stick over here applying VAT to them as they were a "hot meal"......so another 20% on top.
The outlets which supply them argued that they were not a hot meal - merely a meal cooked on site which potentially could be hot when you purchased it........and so the row went on. Viz, "top tips" recommended all pasty outlets heat their shops to 170 degrees C, and therefore avoid VAT as you are selling pasties at ambient room temp........finally this week the UK Gov did a U Tuen on it and allowed them to continue to be sold without VAT....... She looked at me and rolled those big brown eyes and said, "Oh, I would do it all for you, `cos you`re a Rocker" |

Love 'em filled with lamb stew, and went through a phase where I made 'em endlessly for lunch when I lived in Ottawa. I saw the BS on the BBC about this: how silly. ---- I'm not one to believe in magic, but I sometimes have a second-sight.... |

RE: The Bar
Quote:mmmmmm Cornish pasties Have you ever tried what are supposed to be the original Cornish Pasties, with meat at one end and pudding at the other - so the Tin Miner got lunch and dessert? I haven`t myself but apparently that is the story. Yes - can you believe a VAT on hot snacks? - although I remember 15% VAT added to take aways back in about 1982 (ish), and I was gutted as an Indian or Chines takeaway broke through the more than £1 barrier for a curry and rice, and that was that. A takeway as it was not consumed on the premises did not attract VAT until that fateful day - and once applied it ain`t ever coming off again!! She looked at me and rolled those big brown eyes and said, "Oh, I would do it all for you, `cos you`re a Rocker" |
