Virginia Wineries

We have racked up quite a collection of Virginia wines, seeing as how we're living in the area. This is a good region for Viognier (white) and Cabernet Franc (red). If you're ever in the Charlottesville / Shenandoah area, I would recommend hitting up these for a tasting:

I can recommend Potomac Point and Paradise Creek for those east of the 95 corridor. Potomac Point has slightly better wine, but both are very friendly, relaxing places with very drinkable wine (the P.P. Traminette has the aroma of roses. Seriously.)

I would also highly recommend Keswick Vineyards in Albemarle County. Great location, great folks, and really great wines. Their '09 Cab Sauv won the Governor's Cup.

And further north, I highly recommend Naked Mountain -- their Chard is fabulous. One of the few things I miss from my time living in suburban DC....

I love all of the wineries that have been established here in Virginia!! Thought I would share this: Wine Enthusiast Magazine has named Virginia as one of the 10 best wine travel destinations for 2012. The article, listed online and in the February issue of Wine Enthusiast Magazine, highlights Virginia as one of only three domestic destinations to make the list of wine regions that are ideal for wine lovers to visit in 2012. Virginia was named along with regions in Italy, New Zealand, Spain, Hungary, Germany, France, Chile and two regions in California. The article cites Virginia's rich history, natural beauty and wine makers as some of the many reasons why Virginia is a hot wine travel destination. Virginia is home to more than 200 wineries statewide.

When I was stationed in Norfolk, there was a wine club on base that you could go join and try many of the local vineyards around the area. Virginia has an excellent climate for growing, and I am not at all surprised to see them in that list as a wine destination at all. I think there are actually several undiscovered wine areas along the eastern seaboard, and I am still learning about some of those places in the hopes I might be able to visit a few of those.
