RE: Mormon Funeral Potatoes

This is a famous dish among Utah Mormons (I am an Ex-Mormon, thank-you-very-much, and an agnostic just for the record). It got the name "funeral potatoes" because along with the endlessly nasty Jello salads, this is a favorite potluck dish at Mormon after-funeral gatherings beneath the basketball hoop (Mormons, ex-Mormons and Utahns will get this). It's actually quite a tasty dish, but it has like a bajillion calories! Enjoy!! You poor Utah Mormons, always getting stuck with the Jell-O Salads and weird casseroles. I have yet to have funeral potatoes but they are probably one of the only Mormon Utah dishes I'd try. I have to say I was in quite the shock when I left my ward in California, where we'd serve things like baked chicken, spaghetti, salad bars, etc... at our meetings, only to be greeted by 20 different Jell-O molds when I moved to Salt Lake. Good times. I'll never eat another Jell-O dish as long as I live. |
