I had an instuctor who, like Freddie, took the time to explain more than paradiddles and flams, but the reason for their placement in a song and why certain things (with drums) occured when and why they did. Here's to Mr. Gruber and Mr. Hill, for taking the time. "Rollin' numbers, rock-n-rollin', got my Kiss records out!" |

RE: RIP Freddie
The only word I could describe Freddie Gruber with was 'swagger'.
Being a guitarist (And a longhaired LesPaul playing Marshall amp toting one at that;in the early 80's) I tended to listen to jazz as a mental exercise. Being from Jersey I went to 52nd for Manny's and SamAsh and all those great shops, regularly. I saw a 'drummers thing' with Buddy Rich and Irv Cottler and Freddie live in a hall in NYC in and around the early 80's and it was cool, best word to describe it...Cool. (Truth be told I went to see Al Viola and Tal Farlow) I feel for Bubba as I know the value and respect of a teacher, but I also feel for the students that never got a chance to rap with Freddie. I hate that he had a lengthy illness as he was always an upbeat kind of cat (no pun intended). Just gotta respect the guy who laid down the beat for Bird...Freddie was the Be in BeBop. The answer is....is....42 |
