Went to go see Dougie Maclean, one of my favourite performers, last night: intimate venue, front row, and because the local promoter is an old friend, I got to sit in the back seat and chat with him back to the hotel after the gig.

Some wee tunes on video that he did last night (and yes, everyone does sing along at his concerts)....

Turning Away

Ready for the Storm

Definitely at a different end of the musical spectrum from the Polka Trio....

I "rediscovered" a tune I hadn't listened to in quite awhile, "88 Royal Ska" by a major source of audio catnip these days, the 'Labbits.

'Lovelovelove this band - every tune they do is different from every other, their chord progressions and sense of melody just off the charts, Uki-chan's attitude is infectious, and the three boys behind her are excellent musicians. I'm just very, very depressed that King-san left the band last October, 'cause he's a phenomenal bassist - but such is life. The new one is drummer Mah's brother and no slouch, but... he's not King-san. Anyhow, 'happily continuing the adventure in cultural cross-pollination.
.

I never heard of them, have you ever heard of Amazulu? I have been trying to find more of their stuff, but its hard. The only song of theirs I have listened to was on an episode of The Young Ones. Sadly the group as of my last look broke up in 1988.

The Young Ones happened about the general time that I'd started tuning out television altogether, so I missed that show entirely - maybe I'll catch it on reruns at some point. [I did that delayed-watching thing with Star Trek: TNG, oddly enough, 'cause I thought a new ST series would be blasphemy and assumed from the "gender-neutral" altered voice intro that it was going to be a "PC" (Presumptuous Collectivist) soapbox. I tuned in to the syndicated reruns about a decade later and boy was I wrong - I've since learned that hasty judgement is almost always unjust.]

Hmm, Amazula - I think I'd heard the name but nothing beyond that. They've got a ska thing going on there too, and the congo intro sounds exactly like the rhythm of Basia's "Freeze Thaw."

I'm not primarily a ska fan, I just find that it can do strange and wonderful things to heavy rock 'n' roll if it's mixed in sparingly. Another great ska-infused 'Labbits tune is "Mushroom Cat Number Plate", which I need to listen to at least once a week, by way of refueling... Big Grin The chord progression in that one just never stops turning corners - it "goes somewhere," as my classic-jazz-steeped, rock-critical Dad likes to say.

Not sure if it's allowable on this board, but you can usually embed vids like this...
