"seasoning" a cast iron grill
I recently got a new grill for my birthday. It comes with a cast iron grill. After spending all day on my birthday assembling the grill, I read that I have to "season the grill" They recommended vegetable oil or even better, bacon grease. Everyone was hungry and it was getting late but this step seemed all too important. I took the time to do what they said, brushing the bacon fat on the grill pretty much as prescribed. Now I'm seeing some rust on the grill which was what this whole process was supposed to avoid. Any tips out there on maintaining a cast iron grill with oils and fats? Also, any other thoughts on cleaning or not cleaning the entire pit. I already have a lot of grease accumulating in the bottom of the grill.

Proper way of seasoning a cast iron grill:

Pre heat grill to 350f.
Smear lard or shortening on grill.
Leave in grill 30 minutes.
Repeat step 2 more times till grill turns black.
Dont forget to put a foil in the bottom to catch drippings.
