Played trombone mostly, and did get a letter from the folks at the All McDonalds American Band, but they wanted me to pay for all my expenses. I started learning to play drums on my own, but then I joined the navy and haven't touched an instrument since. Thats been one of the biggest regrets of my life, and something I am hoping I can change before too long.

The last time flood waters were that high I remember they had to cancel some of the ships coming in. No ADOPTIONS? You gotta be kidding me!!! Thats like a Portland tradition! Not surprised at no escorts. After the USS Cole incident the navy stopped allowing anyone near their ships. Safety measure but its just too bad because for towns like Portland New York Seattle - that was part of the fun. What a shame.

Same thing with All State and All Northwest Band, too, and no way could my Mom have afforded the expenses. I loved my Bari, but haven't played since HS either. I still have the clarinet I got in 6th grade when I started band, but haven't played it in ages. The Bari was school equipment, but I still think about buying one sometimes...it would be fun to join one of the adult marching bands.

I'm going to go get some pix of the ships just so you can see how high the water is Wink I did get to do one of the last escorts on a friend's sailboat and was amazed at how large the Navy ships are when you're alongside one at water level. Really impressive.

Yep, PDX women of all ages are bummed about not adopting sailors Sad

In January of '85 I came home for three weeks of leave after being at sea for WAY Too long. My folks never could figure out why I kept going to all the bars downtown with my uniform on.Tongue

Whats really funny is when I met Mrs B in PDX....we went to one particular place down on Burnside just into town I in my uniform, Mrs B in her sweater and jeans, and who did they card? My very own missus to be. Boy was she MAD! We went to three places downtown that night and every place carded her...but I didnt even have to break my wallet out. And the ladies were trying their darndest....but I was too preoccupied with my date. The hard part was everybody kept buying me drinks.

That sounds more exciting than any of my trips to Portland when I was younger.

Probably in the last year, I've been able to discover Portland a bit more, at least more than I ever did growing up. Back then, we went to my grandparents' house, my aunt's house and to church and then came home. If we were downtown it was due to the Rose parade to see the stores at Christmastime. If we were on Burnside, that meant that whichever parent was driving the car, was lost.

Mrs. B probably wouldn't mind being carded now would she? I know that I wouldn't mind, lol. Of course, if it's a 21 year old carding me, my thought tends to be something like this, "Nice try at trying to make me feel good when you know I'm old enough to be your mother!"
